Default Axle tramp

Hi guys
Just want to introduce myself to the ANZ contingent on this forum. I have been reading / contributing to this site over the last few months while waiting for my Z to arrive. Finally picked it up from McGrath Nissan a couple of weeks ago. Its a Platinum Touring Model.
I didn't even know that ANZ had a seperate forum until I did a search late last night. I was looking to see if others have had problems with axle tramp. I only experienced this just last Sun. With TC on (in the wet), I eased out the clutch and then mashed the loud pedal. The Z accelerated well without spinning the rears (probably TC helped here). At about 5K, shift to 2nd and mash the accelerator again. That's when it happened. The rear axle started to bounce, about 3 or 4 times, before TC kicked in and the car gained traction.
I hope this would not happen in the dry (I would have TC off then) as this would slow us down considerably when looking for a fast take off from reds. Those of you that have had your Z for longer than a couple of weeks, have you had any problems with axle tramp?

ur spot on KY350. Wheels have noted the Z has a propensity to axle tramp when lighting up the rears in their comparo with the STi and TT Quattro, concluding that it hinders getting the car off the line quickly and smoothly.

Dont know if u read in a thread in Aus section, but i scored a demo about a month ago for a full day. In my court, i did a few quick burnouts and noticed it too, shudders from the rear as the tyres started to spin violenty. A friend of mine in the know actually told me that the Rays wheels being lighter actually induce slightly more axle tramp. Dont know if i can get my head around it tho.

I think the axle tramp may be the combo of sticky tyres, LSD and suspension setup. Its the same scenario with FWD cars, some axle tramp when u spin, some dont. But ur right in that its rare for RWD.

P.S. My mate took a 15sec avi of me bagging up the demo to the extent where i had to wash inside the guards b4 i gave it back. I gotta grab the digital camera off him and work out how to dl the avi onto my comp and post.

In a galaxy far, far away................................

Back in a previous lifetime I used to own a very highly modified 2 litre Escort that suffered from the same problem.

There used to be a thing called (among other things) Tramp Rods, are these available for the Z?????????

I'm not sure how well they would work or how they would look?

ZEXC-33, i pulled out the relevant issue of wheels and quote "A propensity to axle tramp hampers the Z's launch, but once it's moving...". Wow, if this happens in 1st (Wheels)and 2nd (me in the wet), we'll get blown by bog standard auto falcons, not to mention XR6T!!!
How may revs do you dial up for a fast launch? It seems that you must be precise as too many revs = axle tramp = slow launch and too few revs = slow launch also.

Harry, if you can get a tramp rod for the Z that works, I'm interested.

the axle tramp is a problem sure but KY350 i wouldnt get too concerned over it. The axle tramp doesnt occur all the time, only in certain situations with certain revs and amount of rear wheel grip.

The Wheels issue may have been a combination of rear wheel grip and road condition......road looks very rough in the small pic Wheels has. My current car is FWD, and in the wet sometimes i got axle tramp on my new Pirelli Neros, but never had it happen in the dry. Also with the demo i had, the axle tramp varied between non existant and then a slight shudder. It all depends on the circumstances i rekon.

But ur right about it slowing down the launch. Sure the axle tramp feels violent inside the cabin, but could u imagine the stress its putting on axle, LSD, gearbox, etc.

I have just over 1000km on my car and my buddy who works at Toyota reckons that is sufficient to run the motor in. I also don't think I can wait another week and a half to clock up 2000km, so over the next few days, I will try launching from standstill at different revs to find the ideal revs. Yes, the type of blacktop will have an effect, but I need a starting point.

I opened up the engine to 6000 rpm (after a gentle rolling start at the F4 toll gates) in first, quick change to 2nd which also saw 6k. Glad to report no axle tramp in the dry after the gearchange. Unfortunately a Daewoo descide to cut me off as I'm doing about 90 in 2nd, just as I'm changing gears to 3rd. He ended a most enjoyable 6 seconds or raw power and aural bliss.
