Default Oiled Air Filter Warning

I had an oiled air filter in the WRX and after about a year
I took the car to the tuner complaining of poor idle - tendancy
to stall from idle and hunting at light throttle.
Diagnosis was oil mist migration from the filter to
a sensor in the induction circuit - cleaning is a simple
but potentially risky business for amateurs.
Overall, the performance of the vehicle was adversely
affected, but because the oil build-up was very gradual,
it wasn't noticed 'till the idle became terminal.
Someone more technical might be able to explain -

but beware of oil air filters - dry might be the better choice !

HiTech - VROOOOOOM! but mods coming.

FEARLESS

H - see following.

I've read about it on the main forum. I have a blitz dry filter and that seems to go well BUT i wonder how well it is filtering.

I might check the plenum and see if there is any built up grit once i get a few more kms on it.

btw, the plenum had some deposit with the std air filter last time I had it open....so that isn't perfect either.

frosty...

Are you using Hi-Tech exhaust as well? How come it looks a bit different from harry's? Your exhaust pipes from the muffler are in black colour instead of publish SS and It is not sitting horizontally though, have you noticed that?

And also does Hi-Tech exhaust have any Logo on their exhausts? what sort of logo do they have? a "kangaroo inside the triangle"??

cheers,

richie

Yes - is HiTorque - goes and sounds fantastic - especially on full
noise. Highly recommended and I'm pharkin phussy!
Something in production slipped a cog - story a bit clouded -
will report later.
As a result of the stuff-ups youv'e noticed, and my bleatings
(notice the position of the flanges/join and its ugly appearance
and liklyhood of jagging speed humps/RTA and pigs lying on the
road, there's a redesign coming up.
Hold on a couple of weeks and it'll be a more professional unit.

Yeah Frosty, know what you mean.

I had the same issue with my Sti - cost me a new air mass meter - Filter had been over oiled by the dealer and there was a build up of gunk (technical term) that cleaning off didn't fix.

My plan would be a dry filter (once I've seen Mr Hi-tech of course).

Cheers,

Default oiled filter and MAF

The oiled filters destroy the MAF sensors. No doubt about it. Happenned to me and others with the WRX.

same thing happened on my Z no more than two weeks ago. definitely do a dry cone filter. the maf costs 485$ right now from nissan dealers only. I would go for a short ram if I were to start over the Short and cold air are not going to give you huge gains in hp any way. either with give you a throatier sound and a look you may desire but in my opninion not a necessary mod.

Started a thread on the main forum some time ago - no definate Z issues at that time, but it seems to have been proven correct.

The trouble is that the damage is done over a very long period
unless severe over oiling is encountered - and you don't notice the depreciation 'till the car gets so bad that it starts to hunt at idle.

Don't try to de-contaminate if you're not REAL sure what you're
doing - and in most cases this is only an iffy fix at best.

Who's got a K&N for sale?

(Sorry)

(ps - thats me other bike)

OK guys let me ask you all a question, if the K&N panel filter glags the MAF what does heavy diesel fumes and heavy oil fumes from other vehicals on the road over a long periods of time do to the MAF sensor, are these fumes filtered out by the dry type filters ?

PS Does the GroupM Ram CAI which uses a K&N filter a better option, is it a dry filter or are the Injen CAI type have any affect on the MAF?

Yeah, ZZZ-35 - you know how your windscreen gets all oily
after a bit of a trip - I rida a "real" bike (H) and when I get home
I look like a blackfella (can I say that, H?) from all the exhaust fumes - so there has to be a cumulative effect on the MAF sensors.

I get mine carefully cleaned annually since the wrx stuffup.

By the way, can someone interpret the abbreviations that
some use on the forum
AFAIK BTW 'n the like. Some posts I dunno wot's goin' on!

And re the farki'n fuzz points - I'm winning 3-nil - but barrister
costs make me wonder if I wouldn't be better paying up.

Harry taught me all the bad words.

Dearest TEPID, please dont blame me for your unusual spelling of particular words.

BTW (by the way), if you go to www.acronymfinder.com you will find what all this funny looking words mean AFAIK (as far as I know).

Diesel fumes and carry over fuel are on the outside of the filter and get trapped ( the oiled filters do that bit well ) - unfortunately the oil mist that stufs the MAF ( Mass Air Flow ) is from the inside of the filter surface.

Later high speed MAF sensors ( capable of following the pressure fluctuations of even a single cylinder ) are enven MORE sensitive so this problem is goig to become even more of an issue as time goes by. However the MAF design is changing by incorporating curved air passages so that heavy particles and oil are diflected form the sensor film by centrifugal force.

So what's the Z got?

Should we ask for cleaning or is it tended to as routine?

Or do we wait 'till it Pharks-up ond get a new one?
