Default JCW Mini vs Z

Had a good run with a JCW Mini today from about 80 kph onwards. I tell you it was quick.

All I can say "I need BOOST, and soon"

God damit.

Didn't lose but really couldn't pull away. I *assume* it was a JCW as the plates were JCW and some digits.

I really don't care for win or lose it is the drive and enjoyment. My only grip is I pay for a Sports car when I'm actually getting a Sport Tourer.

Ah well them the breaks.

Sorry a JCW Mini is the John Cooper Works Edition.

In a nut shell.

New Head, SC, Exhaust and Boost = 145 kw in 1150 Kgs *I think* PDF

The gap.. Umm not really a gap as I was pulling away very slowly. (It was on a decent gradient also)

Wound out 3rd and shifted to 4th and backed off about 5000 rpm in 4th before he nearly took out a Volvo changing lanes.

JCW stands for John Cooper Works, its a engine enhancement kit that can be fitted at all BMW/Mini dealership at ~$10k, and it will bring the car from 163hp to 200hp. Thats include BMW/Mini warranty so no one will blame you if the engine blow up.

But for similar sort of money, you can have a Hertge or similar aftermarket kit ("may" void factory warranty, BMW/Mini is not as bad as Nisshit, they usually allow minor mods, or turn the blind eye) which will bring the Mini to 250+hp, and the best available now is a 275hp Mini Cooper S (MCS), and thats not including a turboed supercharged MCS which they are currently working on.

HERES more info if anyone is interested.

BTW, wait till you meet some Hartge kitted cars, they r frigging fast, JCW is the slowest in a recent comparo in UK.

I owned a Mini MCS as well, and I wouldnt hasitate to say the MINI corners better if both the zed and Mini are standard, they are really fun to drive!!!

hmmm, I'm surprised that is was that close ...in particulaur from 80 -> 140kph or so. 145kW in 1150kg gives you 7.9kg/kW weight-to-power ratio. That is pretty good, but not much better that a Renault Clio so I'd expect it to not be much quicker. I'd expect it Astra Turbo quick and the Zed should wipe the floor with that (at least mine did). I guess the JCW Cooper S must be a lot quicker.

ps. a Stock 350Z has a weight-to-power ratio of 7.0kg/kW.

My only grip is I pay for a Sports car when I'm actually getting a Sport Tourer.

Yep, agree with that ... it's so close but they had to throw a lot of GT stuff into the car. Not sure why they did not make a GT and Track model ... I'm sure bouth would sell.

David. The other factor that I should point out is that I also had a passanger which he did not. It all adds up.

David. The other factor that I should point out is that I also had a passanger which he did not. It all adds up.

It sure does, but the lighter car is more hadicapped by the 'extra' weight than the heavier one. eg.
- 350Z + driver + passanger = 1450 + 80 + 80kg = 1610kg/206kW ie. 7.8kg/kW

- JCW Mini + driver = 1150 + 80kg = 1230kg/145kW ie. 8.5kg/kW

So, the driver+passanger added to a 350Z 'handicaps' it about as much as the JCW Mini is with driver alone. Lotus Elise is really bad with this. You take a passanger on board, and you'll be 20kph down on the top-speed even at tracks with short straights like Winton and Wakefield.

Still, none of this changes the fact that the Mini you met must have been really moving.
