Default New video Cal Speedway

Courtesy of our friend Boones, here is some video of the Speedventures outing, blue group, on December 17th.
At 12 minutes is a black vette spinning off track right on my nose. Some nice action with NSX, Viper, S2K, Porsche, Vette...plenty of nice cars. This group is pass with a "point by" anywhere on the track, and most of the drivers are more experienced and much better than I am, so learning a lot, going faster, and trying not to hold anyone up. One shot of a full race prepared JGTC porsche who was out there practicing with us, ripping by us all. And yes, the track prepped vipers were going through that banked oval turn much faster...about 145 to my 125-130! Enjoy.

Fortunately he just did a little bit of sideways and backwards OTE in lawnmower mode, and did not hit the wall or tire barriers. It is a tough compound turn because you are going about 110mph+ when you get to the braking zone. Because the turn is almost 90 degrees, you are putting a lot of the adhesion of your tires to the test with the turn. Therefore, if you continue to brake into the turn with a trailbraking technique you quickly flirt with exceeding the capacity of the tire to do both tasks, and as you see in his case the rear let loose on him as a result. Once it was clear that he was beyond a recoverable angle, and if you replay it you can see that only takes a fraction of a second to conclude, all I had to do was hold the line and let him drift out of it. This took a little faith as I am not that experienced and pointing right where his car is, but you hope it will not be, could be disconcerting...but in fact it developed just like on the chalk board and when I got there, he had moved off to the side and I could just stick to the "line" and zip through. My option was to wrest the car left off track over the candy stripe berm...cutting the corner so to speak...to avoid collision. That could be unpleasant for the undercarriage, so I am glad that was not required in that instance.

Nope. The JGTC car went by us like we were standing still. It was just the SLOWEST one in qualifying!!

Their race route for the actual JGTC race was a bit different, specifically they had a very severe chicane at the end of the front straight, delineated by some large tire barriers. They did not run the banked oval of turns one and two, but instead were shunted below to the flat apron. I am not sure of what all the reasons were for this, but the word out was that it was a concern over tires and whether they would handle the pressures since they do not run anything comparable in Asia as a 14 degree banked NASCAR turn. I am not sure if that is really the case, as you have to believe that anything JGTC is running is as sophisticated and well engineered as it can be anywhere in the world. It could be that since this was the inaugural race that the prospect of someone losing it at warp speed and being severely injured or killed would be rather bad public relations, so better to rein it in just a bit this first time. If they could punch it all the way down the front and into the bowl you should assume they would be doing 180mph plus ......I doubt they come anywhere close to that speed on their other circuits.
If they keep coming back and the drivers get some practice on it, you have to believe they are going to be chomping at the bit for a chance to run it.

When was that and how did you sign up for it?

I was there during the JGTC, but we only got to drive on half the track.

December 17th. It was the Speedventures track day. During that day for about two hours (12:30-2:30) the JGTC cars got to practice while we had lextended lunch break.
