Default Portable air tanks

Has anybody used a portable air tank before? I found some at Lowes and Sears for under $40. I would just need it to add air for a track day, would a 5 or 10# bottle be enough? Is this something I would then fill up at a gas station before hand? Thanks

Actually, fill up at the track. That air is usually drier.

I have a tank, but I find I use the air at a track or autocross as it's usually on a compressor and far easier to fill up.

most gas station pumps have trouble getting the PSI up high enough. then again, maybe that's because i run 60psi on my hoosiers. i'm sure one tank full would be enough to fill up 710s.

if you want to spend a little more for some lighter tanks, there are high quality aluminum tanks out there for about $80. http://www.behrents.com/

did you read my thread on the high pressure compressed air tank? very small, compact, with 3500psi of nitrogen (better than using conventional air, more stable, less moisture).

I searched, but did not find such a thread. Do you have a link?

okok, here we go:

things you need, all of which can be purcahsed at a welding supply store... even ebay too.

1. bottle. $50-100
-3500psi
-bottle size is up to you
-$5 to fill up
2. regulator. $50-XX
-step down the 3500psi to about 125psi
-dual stage might be cheaper
3. hose. $20
-can be purchased pretty much anywhere
-15' yellow coiled seems to be popular
-don't forget the attachments for the valve

Lets not forget that anybody wanting to run Nitrogen in his tires should empty/vaccum his tires to get rid of as much air as possible first.

A freind of who is a crew member for The Racers Group (Daytona Prototypes) and routinely wrenches on 996/7 GT3 Cup Cars and RSR's swears by nitrogen. He has two systems (high and low pressure). The low pressure for tools and filling tires. The high pressure for car jacks - which is damn cool. I'm building a system for my track trailer with a 20 pound low pressure nitrogen bottle.
