just thought I'd share b/c I've heard ppl doing something similar, but never saw it until I tried it.

Last month I had a track event that my wife (and small dog) wanted to attend...I had been using the passenger seat for 2 of my track rims, but I found another way - needless to say, I got a lot of weird looks while on the highway.

-2 wheels on top (strapped to ski racks)
-1 wheel in location of spare tire
-1 wheel slid from passegner side and held between rear strut bar and seats (this one is covered in a grey garbage bag).
-tools, clothing, camera gear, and helmet around rear area.

It all worked out, only problem was that the wheels on the ski racks had a very very slight front/rear movement when stopping or accelerating...I just took it slow and made sure I had plenty of space ahead of me.

 

now that's imppressive.

who makes a ski rack for the 350z! ive been looking one to lug my snowboard back and forth.

at first, i thought you had a trailer.

the ski racks were my dad's old set (probably from the early 80's), they're adjustable, so they fit just about anything.

 

I'm confused as to how they attach to the car??

 

The ski racks have an adjustble length hook on each side of them that grabs the ledge of the door seal. (for the Z, it grabs where the window would normaly seal to the top of the door). The wheels were then mounted to the ski racks.

*In previous cars, the car door had the window frame included, so when you closed the door, the hook from the ski rack would be between it...the Z has a different style of door, and I think that along with the extra weight, is what allowed a little extra forward/rearward motion.

That's the one that would kill you and your passenger if anything happened while on the road...

 

I actually tried this with the two in the passenger seat this weekend for a jaunt up to Cincy and the CenDiv this weekend. The roof rack is a great improvement. You can run a bungie or two though the tire in front of the strut bar, and hook it on the cargo loops behind it. At least it would keep it from killing you in hard stop.

Alas, after loading the car, I weighed my options, and just put the tires on for the trip up. I hate the road noise from the Advan A032's, and you have to watch every single pot-hole on the trip, but then I got to stand and watch all the tire changing in paddock.

I've got the prints for a verticle hitch (friend at Nissan, it's actually for a Murano but will work), and am researching build shops to make it. I'll be changing to a tire trailer as soon as possible.
