I've read the rule book a few times and can't tell if running a Nismo front bumper is legal...I'm thinking it's not b/c no where does the rulebook say it is. (I know I can add a front/rear spoiler...but no mention of full bumper)
is it illegal?
thanks,
Peter
*I'm just asking b/c someone local is selling it for a good price.
is it illegal?

"6) Nismo front/rear lip spoilers are legal, side skirts are not (again puts you in SM2)"
He is saying spoilers, which are legal. A bumper cover or any kind of body work other than a spoiler or fender flares are not SP legal.
my original question was:
Ground effects
Currently I'm stock. However I would like to add a nismo front bumper cover. mostly because I like it not because I expect any real performance gains. I believe this is legal as long as I don't add side skirts. Is this true?
and the answer was:
6) Nismo front/rear lip spoilers are legal, side skirts are not (again puts you in SM2)
your right there could be a disconnect between the question asked and the answer...howerver.. the rule reads:
Spoilers and cosmetic trim pieces are permitted. Side skirts may
not be used. Spoilers must comply with the following subsections.
The intent of this allowance is to accommodate commonly
available appearance kits, and replicas thereof, which
have no significant aerodynamic function at Solo speeds.
1. A spoiler may be added to the front of the car below the
bumper. It may not extend rearward beyond the front most
part of the front wheel well openings, and may not block
normal grille or other openings, or obstruct lights. Openings
may not be used for the purpose of ducting air to the radiator
or oil cooler, but they may allow air to flow through a permitted
oil cooler provided no ducting is used. The spoiler may
not function as a wing.
It is my opinion that the Nismo front bumper cover would be allowed under this rule. and that such Items are the exact reaon the rule was written.
if they are not allowed then The rule is a bit vague no?
but then I've haven't raced yet..and I do defer to those who have. espcially a national champion

If you doubt what I am telling you send a email to the SCCA tech dept.
A more fundamental question is:
What are your autocross competition plans? If you want to run regionally then your local competitors will "probably" be OK with the Nismo front bumper cover in BSP, epecially if the class is a little short of competitors. Once you get the bug and want to measure yourself against the top competitors at a National Tour, you'll need to put the OEM bumper cover back on.

that's why I asked - b/c it only talked about a front/rear spoiler, which is very different from a whole bumper cover...plus, even in the front/rear spoiler section, it says it can't be used as a duct for airflow through the radiator - by changing the front bumper, airflow is going to 'change' around the radiator...even though I doubt a Nismo front bumper would add any kind of performance/cooling gain, someone could argue that it does.
Thanks again for the help Ulllose.
