how does these seals function to prevent knock back? how do they compare to using springs?

I don't know,

I would say the seal uses the fluid pressure in the caliper to generate friction and a one way resistance to limit the piston's movement back into the caliper.

I'll take some pictures of the seals when I get them.

Right after rebuilding my calipers with standard seals, I find out about this. Just great!

Let us know how they work, Kolia. And hang on for a lengthy post from me on my experience rebuilding and repainting my Brembos. I hope to have it up in a few days, complete with pictures.

What difference are these seals supposed to make?

I think it is to prevent the piston from traveling back into the caliper which in turn results in a soft brake pedal feel after a long high speed straight. I experienced the same issue at VIR this past weekend braking for turn 1 and turn 14.

How in the hell does the piston travel back into the caliper? I've never heard of such a thing.

Don't quote me on this but at VIR I was told it happens because "The little amount of play that the rotor has at high speed is enough to push the pads outward, forcing the piston to recess back into the caliper."

Here it is.

Search on "knockback." We've had several threads on it.

It's quite common in the Z because of the angle at which the front calipers are mounted. In hard corners, the hub flexes enough to push the pistons back a few millimeters. As a result, when you hit the brakes the next time, the pedal travels farther than you'd expect before starting to grab.

I've gotten completely used to it, and either tap the brakes a little before the start of the hard braking zones, or just expect the pedal travel and deal with it.

I suspect that if you track your Z and haven't experienced knockback, you're not taking the corners fast enough!

Pad knockback. Flex in the hub under heavy cornering loads will cause the rotor to become a fulcrum and push the pistons back into the caliper a small amount. The larger the rotor, the moe pronounced the pad knockback. The result is a friendly suprise going the next time you step on the brake as the pedal willl sometimes go to the floor.

As for the seals, I honestly don't see how these really work, but I can be humored...
