Default Tow hooks?

Hey guys,

We need to replace the tow hooks we're using for Grand Am. Does anyone have any pointers for folding tow hooks front and/or rear?

We could machine something up, but I'd rather buy something if it already exists.

Thanks,

-Rich

In the rear, you're just going to find the OEM hook which is attached to the frame on the driver's side. For the front there is a folding hook available. I cannot remember who though. You'll also need to make sure it's the right size, as the 03-05ish are a smaller thread compared to 06+ (I belive those are the correct year designations).

Rich- try www.rennenmetal.com. Nothing specific for the Z, but they do have universal tow hooks that might be adapted. What changed about Grand Am rules on tow hooks this year?

There was a production change mid-year with the '05s. The front tow hooks were 16mm in OD, while the '05.5-08s are 22mm in outside diameter.

Thanks guys.

We have both an 05 and an 06 and were disappointed to find the bumpers and tow hooks were different.

I had a look at the ones on ebay (didn't think of searching there). My only concern about them would be the tensile strength of the aluminum. I've seen aluminum ones snap right off and go flying toward the tow vehicle if they were pulled from any angle other than straight on, so I'm a little leary of them.

Granted, not these ones in particular, but some other ones.

Anyone have the unfortunate opportunity to test the ebay one?

TC design right here in milpitas makes them. Tony should have the Z specs because he made mine a couple years back.

Hey Dave,

I know Tony. He's a good guy. Unfortunately his were the ones I saw snap.

I have someone who's going to do a structural analysis on a tow hook that will break just before the threads give up. We should have something in the next couple weeks. We'll see what we can come up with.

Are the Safequip tow straps legal and strong enough? I've been looking at these as an option, but I'm not sure whether these can be applied to the Z. I've seen them on Spec Miatas, but that's about it.
