i agree with not worrying too much about heel-toeing. if you get it, great, but I find that it just messes with trying to be smooth.

What helped me the first couple of times out there was just trying to be as smooth as possible with the inputs, and concentrating on the line.

yes, heel and toe is a secondary skill that can be worked on after you have good braking and steering inputs. Before I worked on them I would work on good smooth straightline braking, correct turn in points and a consistent line. I would also work on shuffle steering before H&T.

I'm curious as to what instructor is telling you shuffle steering is a good idea on a circuit.

I would like to hear how others were taught or learned how to handle large steering inputs. Unless you have a vehicle with very quick steering, you will end up crossed on a tighter turn unless you are shuffle steering. That will greatly limit the amount of further input or completely lock you into a position with no recourse. We may just be having a difference of terminology.

There is one hairpin turn at our local course in Colorado, Pueblo Motor Sports park, turn 7. It is a very sharp hairpin tunr, and you have to both shift down to 2nd gear, and provide some pretty large sterring inputs. I usually go hand over hand for it.

Hand over hand means at some point your arms are crossing over each other and your hand positions are way less than ideal. I understand that it works for many but I prefer to shuffle steer and keep my arms on the correct sides of the wheel and have plenty of room for steering input. With this I can get a 1/4 turn before the transition to the other hand to get another 1/4 turn and so on. This shouldn't be any less smooth than hand over hand, and my hands never cross the center plain of the wheel. The only difference is where the hand to hand transition occurs. This also leaves a whole lot of input available instantly if needed. The other good side of it is if something does go wrong, my arms are not crossed if an airbag deploys.

Most of the Trans Am and Rolex GP/GT guys I run with use the Shuffle method, but there are still a few hand over hand hold outs as well. The T1/T2 ranks are truley mixed.

A lot of the Time attack guys are self taught so it will be interesting to see what their opinions are.

Close, but not quite.

Example: making a right hand turn.

The left hand move the wheel by going from 9 to 12, the right hand meets the lefthand and continues the movement from 1 to 3 while the left hand returns to the 9 postition.

You don't need to do it much, only when the steering is over 1/2 turn or more, and most competiton cars don't need it at all since their steering ratios are so tight.
