Default auto-x tire sizes

do i need to worry about the trying to keep near the stock overall diameter for track use when the vdc is off?

i am having a hard time finding sizes that do. i dont want to track w/ my volk gt-s' on kdw2's and am looking for a 18" or maybe even a 17" setup. what sizes do you guys run? id like to have about a 285-305 in the rear w/ 245-265 up front.

any help would be great, thx guys

forgot, my suspension is stock w/ light performance mods and some aero mods. dont really want to lower maybe .5" at most. i would like mostly just to stiffen it up a bit.

i have been looking at hoosier a/r6's, kumho v710's and mx's mostly. not a big fan of falken's and bridgestone's don't run wide enough. and since i dont see anyone running nitto's i assume they are bad.

* Since you're going to run out of stock then go to a 17" wheel. The tires are cheaper.
* Get a set of light wheels and wide tires.
* 710's have worn the best for me. Hoosiers cord quickly on a stock car but you might be able to get more camber and not abuse them.

What class do you run in?

Your aero mods probably aren't doing anything at parking lot speeds. I'm also surprised you want to run such a staggered setup.

For autox - benefits go to small cars that can turn quick with less inertia to move around. The Z is a pig. I'm not sure what the rules are in your class, but for autox I would actually want the rear to come around easier, which would help in acute angle turns and 180s. I'd be looking to run something ~270 front AND rear. 17" wheels lead to cheaper tires. If you don't have the Brembos or another BBK to clear (I don't think 17s clear the OEM Brembo setup), then I'd run 17s, most definitely. For wheels, I'd go dirt cheap and light weight. Made from cardboard if possible, painted the most hideous color of lime green and hopefully $100/wheel.

Now the track is a different thing as you are at much higher speeds, the consequences are exponentially greater but you also use a lot more of the mechanical grip of the chassis.

If you run with that extremely staggered setup you'll be plowing the entire course.

it is going to be almost entirely just for auto-x since the closest road course is 5 hrs away.

i have to run BStreetPrepared (BSP) due to my berk cats, oversize wheels and tires, plenum spacer and modified lower collector.

the rear likes to come around enough as is. i thought that running a staggered setup it would help turn-in. if not let me know, thats why i started this thread, to learn from experienced 350z track-ers.

ive got one event under my belt and won my novice class and now they want me to run BSP. so any and all help would be great, i'm gonna need it running against evo's and sti's and such lol. my first several runs i was driving like i was at a drifting event lol, but i started to run a lot more smoothly on the last few. it actually handled pretty well i think for being stock suspension. i thought it was the staggered tires and aggressive offsets. am i wrong? and i found my optimal psi in one weekend as well, 35-f 35.5-r cold.

i know the aero mods won't effect on the auto-x course but i just don't want to damage them.

no brembo's here, touring model. also are the nismo s-tune pads good for this sort of thing?

i have thought about 17's but was worried about screwing up the vdc, as far as not stock-ish tire sizes. is it ok as long as it's turned off? my street setup is only over by .1 in overall diameter, and most of the v710 and a6 tire sizes are significantly shorter in diameter.

thx for the input guys.

If you are serious, be prepared to spend a lot of money.

Start by getting as much instruction as you can with good to great drivers. They will make up for the following items you can't afford.

The aero stuff that the Z has won't matter. Good for looks.

Suspension. See what kind of camber you can get with the current rules and After Market suspension parts.

Get the largest R-Compound tires that will fit on your wheels and within the wheel wells without rubbing. I don't remember off hand if you can roll your fenders. If you can, go bigger.

Stock brakes are fine for autocross. You'll never get them smoking.

CAI, intake, headers, test pipes.... go for it. Look at the Engine/Tuning section of this forum.

If you can change the ECU map, do it. Look for rpms and wide open throttle settings at max.

If you go overboard then go on to SM2 and have fun.

isn't this a little too wide for them? aren't they only 8.0-f 8.5-r? that's what wiki says.

For AutoX, forget about the documentation or wheel width recommendations. If it fits, try it. 285/30R18s fit, and they actually work very well.

for BSP, you can fit:

Front: 295
Rear: 315 (mild roll for the fenders...only issue that I have w/ this is that when it's super cold out, they don't get enough heat in them...but once it stops snowing/raining in Seattle, this shouldn't be a problem)

**I run BSP in the NWR-SCCA...if you ever want to make the trip over to this side for an event, let me know and you could probably co-drive my Z - it's not a 100% BSP car, but getting close to it. Trying to be competitive in BSP is going to cost lots of $$ and will start to turn your Z into a track/AutoX only car - but if you're not worried about being competitive, then just go out and have fun!

Just an FYI... If you want to run BSP you need to cover your air duct in the front bumper, it is not SP legal, it moves you to SM2.

18X10" (I wanted wider, but couldn't find a set w/ the correct offset and price)
offset +38

*I'm running a +15 spacer all around...I ended up rolling the rear fenders to go that wide.
