NASA HPDE vs. SCCA PDX?

We've also talked with NC Region SCCA about the possibility of co-oping the event we run the 1st weekend in October. Now that we're done with our VIR events, we only have CMP and Rockingham left, so we'll be talking more with them about that possibility (We both need help filling the Rockingham weekend.)
I'd like to say something about the solo thing: Over the last few months, I've noticed something a little disturbing to me. I'm encountering more and more people that think just because they've been signed off to solo for a session or two, means that they will be "Solo" for their next event with that group, or another group. (Slow.Jim, I'm not saying this is you, but maybe it applies?) At our DE's, our instructors are encouraged to let his or her student solo for at least one session per event if appropriate. This isn't to see if they can do it on their own, it's to give the student a chance to experience driving solo on track. Especially for the novices, and depending on the vehicle, it can greatly change the dynamics of the car, and it's something students need to experience.
Now, there are groups out there now who do, in fact, make instructors optional after "graduating" out of the beginner group. This can be very tempting for some hot-shoe with a fast car. It can also be very dangerous, and I hope people on this board realize it, and request an instructor for as long as your car can carry a passenger. Granted, you might not have the instructor the entire event, but like Marty said, it's always good to have another set of eyes and experience take a look at your driving. Now.. this assumes quality instruction...which is a topic for another thread I think.
Everyone have fun and be safe out there

I've got 2 years and quite a few days under my belt with organizations ranging from SCDA (not a spelling error) to PCA to BMWCAA and other 'private' lapping days where we just rented a track - to the point that I've been invited to (and have done a little) become an instructor w/ several of those orgs - but I still value having someone's instruction and company for at a bare minimum my first session out, and KNOW I have a lot to learn. Just my $.02

One of the things so inviting about the SCCA PDX at the Rock was the pricing. It was hands down the least expensive event around here ( no offense in regards to TZC or Asphalt Adventures
). I believe last year was MAYBE $275.00 or possibly less for the two days, minus TT's. I know a lot of people really don't like that track, but personally I had a great time and have looked forward to going back since I left. Infact, this year I have recruited two additional vehicles to come as well. I think THSCC/TZC/NCSCCA could fill all the spots pretty easily. To me, SCCA struggled with attendance number b/c of advertisement purposes. Nobody knew that event was even going on. Long story short, one of the groups need to pony up and get it scheduled. I need dates/prices to get things straight on my schedules. As I am sure others do as well.

We have Oct. 4-5 scheduled for NCS, and Stacy and Brad are working on a date sooner.
NASA HPDE/TT is region and track dependent. At Pueblo, with Nasa Rocky Mountain, an older track, we pay $250 for the weekend, which includes at least 4 20 minute sessions each day. However, when we go Miller Motorsports Park in Utah this June, it will be $345 for the weekend, with slightly more sessions.
A lotof it depends on the fee the track charges. NASA is a for-profit group, so they always have to make at least a little bit of money each weekend. The director here in NASA Rocky Mountain, Dave Balingit, is a great guy, and will bend over backwards to make sure everyone has a good weekend. The rest of the crew, from the Chief Instructor, to the Race Director, and on down, are all great guys. We have one of the biggest 944-Spec racing groups here in NASA RM because the 944 Spec group leader is great at getting people to join, and very, very suppoprtive. Heck, they have build parties for each others cars, and share secrets about car prep freely. The AI/CMCcrowd is pretty strong here as well. Time Trials is slightly smaller, but still decent, and the HPDE groups are great as well. One of the resident Z members here, jgray, just passed his instructor course last event, and is now in instructor and TT'er in his base model Z, and runs the track quite fast, faster than my TT G35 does!!!

FWIW... our Rockingham price last year was $265 before any discounts. It won't be any cheaper than that this year, but we'll do our best to make it worthwhile.
