Default Brake questions for tracking

i was thinking about my next purchase and wanted some feedback
to help me with my decision, i have stoptech 2 piece aerorotors that
i was running all the time for track days and daily driving and had nismo
pads(decent for auto-x and fine for street-suck for track days)my
rotors are now too thin-will need to replace outer friction rings
so i ordered some 1piece slotted stoptechs and cheap street pads for now
i was wondering if it would be worth it to buy new friction rings and a good
set of track pads(approx $500-600) or just buy a second set of slotted
rotors and track pads and just use those for track days only(approx $300-400)and sell my aerorotors.

by the way i have brembos with s.s. lines and motul 600 fluid for reference
and i have been having problems with brake fade and stopping power
when tracking at high speeds at Sebring

Hi Chris,

To keep costs low I would just get replacement friction rings for the Aerorotors and race pad setup for the track and another set of cheap cast rotors and streeet pads for the street. I think Stoptech sells titanium backing plates to help insulate the caliper from the heat which will help.

I'll be at Sebring on the 14th.

+1 on the friction rings. I got mine from a semi-local shop in Buffalo NY "Innovative Tuning" http://www.innovativetuning.com - talk to the owner, Mike (there are several Mikes there lol) - he hooked me up pretty good on 8 friction rings (2 full sets front/rear).

hey Larry,

that was my first choice but i read some thread recently where some guy
was buying the cheapest rotors he could fine and using track pads and
was having good luck at the track, but i think he was in a different part
of the country on a track different than Sebring(the most brutal track
in the southeast on brakes)so i wanted to get some more opinions

i wanted to try to come down to see your next event but you are
going on Saturday and i have to work, i always go on Sundays.

i am doing an auto-x in Zephyrhills next Sunday, you are welcome to
join me if you feel like driving up that far, i can get you in as a guest

thanks for the reference, i have a direct contact at Zeckhausen racing
who is the distributor for stoptech in us so i will probably use him
but it is still expensive

looks like i will probably go with this option because the weight savings
are important with the aluminum hats
i am going to look into doing some more weight saving in the front of
my car to help with braking as well, thought about a braille battery and
a lighter strut bar to start

i am already about 100-115 lbs off from stock now but i figure 30-35 more
might help the brakes a little more

the Alu hats also help keep heat out of the hub assembly FYI

Personally I would take the Decent set of rotors and track pads route. No matter how good the friction rings or rotors are, several track days and track pads will wear them out. If you can keep them just for track use, the wear will not only be less from less use, but the pads will only be on the rotors at track temps. Street temps on track pads can kill a rotor. You can also take the time before and after each event to check the rotors for cracking.

I ended up getting the 2-pc because at the time there was stock for OMGWTF prices or those. The replacement rings are a decent enough deal after a few times, but I think long-term off-brand simple replacement rotors would have been a better deal. However, since I was able to buy a 2nd set of 4 rotors used (and new friction rings for all) I'm now nicely supplied *fingers crossed* for the season of DEs

both ideas sound good, what it boils down to is do i buy the cheaper
route sooner and be able to do a track day in August or save up more
money and get the better stuff and go in October, i am trying to avoid
buying on credit and being able to just pay cash instead, visa card
balance is getting a little higher than i would like and need to pay it
down to a comfortable amount just in case the economy gets any worse
and i need something to fall back on

decisions, decisions

I'd go with spending less on car parts and more on seat time if I were you
