Speed Secrets Seminar
Registration is NOW OPEN for the 1st (hopefully annual) Ross Bentley Speed Secrets Seminar Weekend
Hosted by Tarheel Sports Car Club, Triangle Z Club, and Asphalt Ventures.
September 6th & 7th, 2008 - Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center, Durham, NC
Saturday will focus on instructing and coaching drivers. Even if you've been instructing for decades, you owe it to yourself and your students to attend this seminar. You'll be introduced to new techniques and approaches that will enhance your instruction and your students' learning. Advanced drivers will get a lot from this seminar as well as it will help you get thru that developmental plateau on a more mental level.
* What instructing is really about (the student)
* Instructing vs. coaching
* How the driver's mind works
* Instructing techniques
* Common driving errors (and what to do about them)
* Much more, plus a Q&A session
Sunday will be geared towards the driver. The material will be useful for any driver of any experience level, and we urge everyone from the seasoned track/race veteran to the once-a-year autocrosser to attend. We also encourage instructors to sign up for both days... there will be some overlap, but most people welcome the review of what was covered in day one.
Some topics covered in Sunday's program:
* Performance - what is it?
* How the driver's mind works
* Improving your mental performance
* Vehicle dynamics
* The mysteries of trail braking
* Using the end-of-braking point
* ... and much more
Registration is being done through the Asphalt Ventures and MotorsportReg.com. Regular price for the seminar is as follows:
- Saturday or Sunday only... $125
- Saturday AND Sunday ...... $200

Have any of you check out his pro states? Not trying to knock him by any means, but it's not that impressive...just leary of forking over money to someone who seems good at marketing himself.

Have you read any of his books? His stuff is right on.
While a super-impressive race record would make for cool stories...I don't think it necessarily makes a great driver coach. Plus...half of this seminar is about how to instruct, not just how to drive. That's something only a talented few have the ability to teach.

Honestly have never heard of him, but I'm not someone who really pays attention to all the drivers. I'm going to pass as I have instructed a few times, just enough to realize it's not for me. I would like to see something more along the lines of vehicle dynamics and car control if you guys continue to try and book seminars.

Read his books on Secrets of Speed, then you might want to attend the Sunday session. He will talk more about getting your mind in the "Zone", and how to better feel what the car is doing. He will also talk about on track exercises to better learn what the car wants and fine tunning the skills you already have.
It's really good stuff.
And on the comment about his Pro Career. How many really good coaches were star players? Vise versa?

As far as his driving stats? Generally it's a very poor indication of coaching prowess... just look at other sports for that. How many incredible players have tried to coach only to fall flat on their faces, but how many marginal players go on to become elite championship coaches? (I'm mainly thinking of football and basketball right now.)
Speed Secrets give you tools to improve yourself (both as a driver, and as an instructor... even a self-instructor). It's up to you to use them. We're simply trying to provide a reasonably affordable means to get some of these tools, or at least expose you to what Speed Secrets has to offer.
Who knows, a light bulb might go off and you might want to get some one-on-one coaching from a Speed Secrets Coach at an Asphalt Ventures event one day

I have purchased and read all of Mr. Bentley's books in the Speed Secrets series, and I think they are a most valuable and solid contribution to the body of knowledge that is available in print for enthusiast drivers. I have not taken any programs or courses/seminars with him or his people. But given an opportunity to do so, I would strongly consider it. It appears to me that his understanding of the science and art of driving fast is very sound and his teaching approaches effective.

Another bump and some important info:
If there's even a chance that you'll still make this event, and you need hotel accommodations at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel... THIS FRIDAY (Aug 22) is the last day to get the event rate of $85. After that, it's like $215 or something rickdiculous. Tell the Sheraton you're with the Tarheel Sports Car Club event (thats how they have the discount listed.)
Still some room available!

OK, the first day of this was awesome. Reading the books gives you a lot of information, but hearing Ross tell you how he found these techniques and rwally going into depth brings the understanding to a whole new level. He also covers material that isn't in any of the books, and what he teaches some of his current clients (and the list is quite impressive).
