This question is asked many times, and here's my answer.

Make a list of what will fit in the car you want to put them in and meets the requirements of the events you are trying to enter.

Then sit in ALL of them. Seats fit everyone differently. So find one that fits you and your requirements.

I like Racetech. They make wide widths for fat Americans. They're good seats too.

Just as an FYI, I was thinking about getting a "Seat" session at a future event. There would be a few cars with different seats and anyone can come by and try them out.

I've own and use Ultrashield, Sparco and MOMO race seats. All are fine products, but you should know there are differences in the way they should be mounted. Any seat model tested and certified to meet the FIA 8855 1999 standards can be mounted directly to the floor. The rectangular FIA label is clearly visible on the lower side of the seat and means that model retained its structural integrity in a series of tests. Ultrashield, Kirkey and others have no FIA certification and (in addition to proper floorpan mounting) should also have seatback braces that mount to the main hoop of a roolbar or cage. This can make a huge difference in the ease of mounting to your Z and should be part of any decision of what to purchase. BTW- in SCCA or NASA racing, this requirement is part of any annual inspection and there are no exceptions!

I agree, I sat in the Sparco EVO L and have to say is more comforable than are stock seats. But, I guess you get what you pay for.

Sanctioning bodies are starting to move beyond FIA 8855 1999. There are new requirements proposed or on the books for left and right head restraints and some smaller changes to better accommodate HANS devices and HANS specific harnesses.

Its really important right now to check the rules and the proposals for the sanctioning body you intend to compete with before buying a race seat, harness, or helmet. Current model seats might be obsoleted soon and you'll see them go on sale for dirt cheap prices. But, you may not be able to get on track with them in your car.

Again, check the rules before you buy.
