autocross help and FAQS
Q:I want to try autocross, but dont know where to start.
Before you just jump in research....Go to a few events first.Talk to the drivers, most of the time they'll be glad to share anything to help you out (they were you at one point ).Maybe even ask to take you for a ride. It will give you a feel for what you'll have to do.
When your ready.Make sure to do basic maint.,TIRES, brakes..you have to have at least 50% life to compete. Empty your car of everything you can, including spare tire and jack.Bring a helmet,a tire pressure guage and airpump if you have one.
The day of,keep it under a half tank of gas, that should be plenty.Remember, this isnt a car show, so tire shine isnt going to help you.
Show up at least an hour before you have to be there. This will give you time to get your car ready (tapping the front in case you hit a cone, set tire pressure, etc)and walk the course a few times. The rest is up to you,No one can give you technique. The first times(or even the season) will be a learning experience,so dont give up.

The SCCA had an advisory for full face helmets when used with air bags enabled. I never really understood it and when I went to get the reference it wasn't on the SCCA Solo site. The SCCA must have pulled it. If I see Doug Gill this weekend at the Dixie National Tour I'll ask about it.

The short version is that the FIA basically was looking at additional safety equipment for formula cars (especially F1). The alternatives were HANS vs. a special, high-speed airbag developed specifically for F1. Because of the higher speed and positioning of the helmet in relation to the airbag, and the much "harder" belting of the driver, the HANS was a far better choice.
In summary, airbags have no business in formula cars.

However, I've also been an amateur and professional musician and performed live in front of pretty substantial audiences. For me, at least, it's the same kind of "stage fright" that I had when performing well-known pieces in front of knowledgeable audiences.
A little bit of nerves is good. It tends to sharpen your focus and improve vision and reactions. Too much, and you're in the "red mist" where the only thing that stops you is hitting the wall.
