This is my 4th time autocrossing the G35 coupe, last year I drove my 96 Nissan 240sx in all of the events. On this G, I'm used to the stock tire size and running Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star spec, but this time I decided to borrow my brother's rear wheel, and rolling on Kuhmo Ecsta MX.
I love the Z1 star spec, possibly the best street tire out there, I even like it more than Bridgestone RE01R. Anyway, I gave the Kumho MX a try and compete in STU class instead (275 width rear). Since its a mismatch stagger setup, the wider rear tires make the car slower in the transition thru the slaloms when compare to the old 245 width tire setup; the car understeer more in the tight stuff but it holds a better line through some sweepers and lane change gates.
One thing I noticed is even with the 275 width rear, it didn't improve my exit as much as I expected, and the MX required a bit longer warm up time than Z1 star spec and Azenis RT615 that I'm used to. Also, one disadvantage of MX is it has a softer sidewall, I really don't like it that much. The car feel "washy" from side to side weight transfer.
Lastly, the factory VLSD had it, when I used to run 245 width rear tire, the LSD locks just fine, but this time I ran 275 width rear and I noticed the inside tire spun a lot more in the extra tight stuff. I'm sure after even more abuse and heat, the vicious LSD probably would behave like a open diff.
Anyway, I just want to share my thought about these matters
