well, I would recomend finding a replacement for the Arai Rx-7 you have. It's not a bad helmet by any means, but it is an M2005. Almost all the organizations are requiring SA helmets. This year the new SA2010's come out, so you can get a really good deal on SA2005s. THis will be good for five years and most people replace their helmets every 5 years or so anyways.
As far as brands go, my recomendation is to go and try a bunch. Every brand and style is shaped slighly different just like people's heads. FOr myself I found that the Gforce brand fit better than a lot of others and actually saved me a little money.
For shoes, make sure they are comfortable, you can get a good feel of the pedals, and they are either natual leather or fire resistant.
GLoves should be SFI rated and good non-slip grip.

Helmet: Bell M4 Pro
Gloves: G-Force SFI Rated
Shoes: Piloti
I also recommend the CG-Lock if you just have a OEM seatbelt.
As for 2005 vs 2010 ratings, check the Snell site: http://www.smf.org/
I don't think the standard for 2010 is publically released yet. There may not be any changes at all. The rating just means that your helmet meets the specs of that "year". After 5 years, a new set of specs comes out and all SA rated helmets will meet it. Motorsport organizations decide how far back they will let you use one. I guess that's their way of keeping people from trying to use an ancient helmet that would be of questionable protection.

Yes, the foam breaks down after a while, and many helmets suffer minor but many impacts over the years. So the Specs may not change, but the helmets get old. THis is a way to have them changed out every 5-10 years. Almost everyone honors the rating for 10 years.
Hey guys, unfortunately I don't have access to a local shop with a stock of helmets but having purchased motorcycle helmets in the past there are a few prerequisites I'd like to meet in purchasing a SA2005/2010 helmet. The following list is a "like to have" feature list. Can you guys tell me from your experiences and choices what helmet you see meeting those needs?
Fairly light (doesn't need to be a featherweight)
Comfortable
Large Eye port
Removable cheek pads at minimum (full interior would be ideal)
Budget $300-$600
What helmet would you suggest? I am seriously looking at a Bell BR1, anyone with experiences with it or even the Bell Sport helmet.

Tell you what I found out personally. I have owned Bell, HJC, K-line and have tried ARAI, OMP, and Simpson and out of all the helmets the G-force proline fit my head shape the best. Surprised me since they weren't the most expensive or labeled the "Best". With many other people I have talked to it seems a certain brand seems to fit one person better than the other along with the features they like.
My best advice is try a bunch of hemets on, friends, track people, etc. See which one feels the best to you and has the features you want. Try them on at a local shop, but also try to buy at that shop if you find one you like. The price usually isn;t that much different than online.
