Default nismo or stillen power steering cooler

...or none at all? So in short, I've been a long time researcher and now Im finally getting prepped to do some mild road coursing, mostly HPDE events or track weekends.

It's been my understanding that the G35/350Z suffers from some power steering oil temp issues and I would like to prevent this if possible and if even neccessary.

So it looks like Stillen and Nismo offer simple affordable solutions, any reason why I should choose one over the other? Specs on the systems seems limited from what I could find through google and the terms are a little too broad to find anything through forum searching.

Pricing from various vendors seems to bring the two systems to a parrellel so cost difference isn't really an arguable issue it would seem.

The stillen system on a g35 seems to require some tweaking and the Nismo system is advertised as a simple replacement type of affair.

Also, while on the subjet, any suggestion on fluid type/brand to use for the steering system or is OEM going to do perform well enough? Would simply changing the fluid solve any temp issues I would run into?

Thanks for the help in advance, looking forward to your comments!

I haven't noticed a problem with my limited track time but I'm interested in hearing from those who have noticed a problem.

I had problems in autoX and bought a stillen PS cooler. It works great and the install was easy. I don't see the point in paying extra for the nismo.

I noticed mine boiling after events...........texas summers....etc....

the stock cooler is too small.....only two rows so when the fluid is flowing it passes through the cooler core too quick to actually cool down..........

I did this 40 dollar mod and it has worked AMAZING!

Thats good to know, I will look into this more than.

Just so anyone interested can find them, everythingG35 has the nismo cooler for $131 and COZ has the Stillen for $125.

I will say though that after seeing Jason's DIY, the nismo unit doesnt seem worth the cost in general as opposed to the Stillen unit which at least seems fancier, althought not necessarily required to be.

Thanks for everyone's input, it was much appreciated. Hopefully you will be seeing me in more often. Too bad driver doesnt have a dedicated auto-sports section.

I think those have more to do with the performance of the dollar in recent years. Financial BS.

Break it down to what it is - a heat exchanger.....you cant limit the flow you can only increase its heat exchange.........more rows = cooler temps with air flow.......only other way would be to add a puller fan or spray -- but of course were talking a Power steering system, not a radiator or an intercooler...

everyone please - note down the average temps you race in (weather), type of racing you do(everyone says "at the track" what track? doing what??, how long your runs are, etc...lets get a true test of these products going for a better feel for them....

I have seen people in TEXAS at drift events boil their fluid with the Nismo unit because its so small (two row).

YOu must remember it depends on the track style - cool down period, etc...

AUTOX:
MOst autoX'ers dont have this problem with the Z because:
They are on a high school football field parking lot - each run is 90 seconds if that, they have cool down time before the next run and this is not an issue.

Drifting:

Me personally, put it sideways over and over, with usually NO wait whatsoever between runs at my local events........

I boil fluid in redundancy and TEXAS HEAT.

HPDE, etc:
On laps over and over again - its found to boil fluid....

What are your tracking styles, weather, wait between runs, etc, how have they held up???

Lets get a real feel for the use and abuse of the products!

# - SN - type of cooler - location - weather temp - redundancy - wait time -
1. Jason - my diy 4row 12" cooler - TEXAS - hot as hell 95-100 degree weather - repeated laps no wait - minimal down time - only tire changes.
2.

Reviving this one because my first event is coming up in June at Hyperfest, so nothing like some rush effort to get the car organized!

There are only two areas on my car I am worried about when tracking it and they are the rear diff/axels because I need to service them and toasting my steering pump/rack. Everything else just needs new fluid and a brake pad change.

So it looks like I will be going with the DIY method similar to Jason's and using Redline's PS fluid, if not Synthetic ATF.

FYI, I am just doing the HyperDrive session. I just dont want to over heat my steering systems due to my large tires and such.

^ doing my DIY "tranny cooler core" substituted for a power steering core will work just fine......

about ~25-30 bucks at local autozone...just compare rubber hose sizes and look for a core that you can use the same size hose and connect to the oem hardlines..

When I did mine I ordered this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DER-13200/

A 30 minute job really, but kind of nasty dealing with all that smelly PS fluid. Plugged right in and I kind of bolted/zip tied up a mounting solution.

^ well its longer, but when fluid is flying through there i hope those 2 rows are enough to cool......

whats the hottest temps you race in? tx weather, that isnt much better than the oem 2 row unit.

I boiled my fluild on the OE cooler in about 90+deg temps on the tarmac (auto-x), I havent been back to the auto-x in those kind of temps again, but after this cooler I haven't done a track day (HPDE) in anything hotter than ~85deg, but I have no problems thus far in those temps. Of course I replaced my fluid with Redline stuff.

I agree with you though, for TX this is just a mild upgrade and he will probably need more. IMO this is just a much cheaper Nismo style cooler.
