Default Another Lexan Window Option

My car has slowly become a dedicated track car. I climbed the HPDE ladder and will be running TTB next season with NASA. I am in the process of doing all my winter stuff and this is one of them. I had the windows cut at a place in Illinois called Pro Glass. I took them my OEM windows to use as a template. I wanted to be able to install the windows in case I need to drive somewhere on the street or more importantly to prevent rain from getting inside over night at the track or while its on the trailer. I used some existing holes in the door skin to secure lexan simply using a bolt and wing nut on both sides. I also used two other bolts to put pressure on it to pull it more towards the inside of the car so that the glass seals better when the door shuts. It is not nearly as tight as the OEM glass of course, but it should keep 99% of rain out if it rains. Both windows can be installed and removed within 5 minues, so I can pop them right out at the track. Let me know what you guys think.

Nice. But if I park my T2 racecar outside at the track overnight, I usually just put the car cover over it and call it good. Otherwise, it stays in the trailer year-round. It's not street licensed, so that's not a factor.

True about the cover. I still have an open trailer though.

The guy made both windows for $325. Then a couple bucks at Lowes for some hardware.

I am going to do Lexan rear too as soon as I get a CF rear hatch.

I think you got ripped off...I paid a place local here $140 to cut mine, and mine are a size thicker. Looks good though, have fun in TTB next year! Are you heading to Nationals?

WOW. $140 thats a great price. I thought 325 was decent actually since they are kind of custom made. Oh well. He did really good work. The windows were perfect.

Yes. I will be at Nationals. I think we had a back and forth in one of your posts actually about being at Nationals.

See you there.

Would you be willing to drive the car without door panels but the glass still in or is that a bad situation just waiting to happen? I'm thinking about doing just that but haven't had the nerve to take the door panels off the G yet.

I see your door handle is still attached is that a custom thing or does the handle come seperate from the door? I would hope the G is the same way if so.

The glass is held in place by motor, so you would need to keep all of that. The lexan lets you bolt it right to the door, avoiding all of that, so when you pull the glass, there is nothing by the door left.

Pull your door panel off and you will see.

Under the door panel is another panel that seals the door and would keep any flying glass from entering the cabin. Though the whole point of removing the door skins is to gut the doors for to save the weight. The stock windows are heavy! The door handles of the Z just have cables that go to the locking mechanism. I have my handle mounted on the door with a few screws.

Yea the door handles are just mounted back to the door skin. One of the existing holes actually is re-used the others were part of the other inside piece that ThreeFiveZero was talking about. I weighed the stock glass when I took it out and each window was ~10lbs, plus several more for the window motor and the tract.

Well the G does still see limited road use, pretty much going to/from autoX. But it also serves as a backup incase my truck breaks down so I do need to keep the windows in there for now. But all the other junk in the door can go.

I just don't want my leg banging off the glass around corners.

In my opinion, gutting the doors in your G isnt a good idea. Do you plan on making the car a full race car? How long do you plan on keeping the car? Without the door panels, you are gonna have to mount up the power switches somewhere, the door handle, etc. Plus, if you are just doing HPDE, the weight savings are irrelevant. Just my .02..

+1 the door panels weigh literally nothing. youd save more weight removing the rondom weight on the trans
