National Street Tire Challenge expands.

National Street Tire Challenge expands.
I attended the first event a couple years ago and I'm happy to see more events at more locations this year. Like the title infers, it's for cars running on their street tires. (140 tread wear and up.)
I intend to run the Atlanta event this summer. (My brother says he'll codrive with me too.) Anyone else interested?

After driving a race car on real rubber anything on street tires is rubbish lol
Alot of events here in aust only go as far as treaded road legal tires (ie semis) but specifying a treadware is a good way to cut costs.

My brother just bought a Mini as an extra car. After crunching some (pax) numbers, we have decided to race the mini at the challenge.
We both own ~300hp cars, but we are actually looking forward to racing a 115hp FWD car.
I'm not that good with FWD, but the BSP pax is so brutal on the Z that I think I have a better chance in a FWD car I just met (in HS) than the Z I know and love in BSP.

Well....I am in for the D.C. event. Barnabas was nice enough to let me borrow his 18x10.5 Enkei's with 285 RS3's. He'll co-drive with me as well. Hopefully none of the philly evo's (Ridgick, Fineberg, etc) come down. It will be bad enough running against regular STU, but the BSP evo's will be STU on roids....
We'll see how the car does on street tires....
Anyone else going?

Myself, my co-driver, Roberto (Kat Ayanama) and his wife will all be in 350z's for the event. Borrowed some Enkei's and 285 RS3's for the event. Been a while since I have raced my car on street tires, but hoping for the best. D.C. region has live timing, like the national office, if anyone wants to keep tabs....

Car is ready to go....
Slim turn out....113 registered. Considering there are ~250 signed up for the D.C. regional event on Sunday.
I am surrounded in grid by a couple of no-names....Sammy Strano in a Mustang and John Vitamvas in an ASP GT3. My co-driver borrowed a BMW for the event and I don't have a tire warmer any more .
D.C., like the national office, has live timing. I'm not certain it will be going for this event, but I would imagine it will..... LINK

It was a momentum heavy course, and the ST guys rocked us. I had the 2nd fastest raw time (behind Vitamvas in an ASP GT3) of the ~50 RWD cars (8th in PAX behind Strano). I made the wrong choice on tires. My co-driver opted for a lower class (DS), and I was left with RS3's....that love heat. I never got any such heat in the tires with 30 minutes b/w runs. Lucky for us we get revenge on the ST guys tomorrow....we are going to run the course in reverse. All of us RWD guys will be on Hoos. Bright spot was I ran in an almost dead heat with one of the best prepped BSP evo's in country (with a co-driver). I thought I was cannon fodder for sure. That was my once a year dabble in street tires....don't like.
Overall, pretty fun event....lots of free swag (though I didn't win anything in the drawings).

Well, redemption was mine. We ran the course in reverse with some changes (for the better in my opinion) today at our regional....I beat the car/driver that had FTD (and beat me by 1.9s) by over a second. I was on hoosiers, though.
I didn't change a thing yesterday....and car wasn't particularly good (no surprise). It was quite good today, however.

Today was my redemption day on a smaller scale....
My brother kicking my @$$ at my first event in his Mini.... (I'm on the right in both videos)

And me finding my redemption today. (My second event in the car.)

He has done a couple event s in the car in Jax, but neither of us have an event until the Ga Street tire Challenge.
We are both leaving a some time out there, but we did well today and had some national-level drivers to gauge our driving by.

My camera won't send the video from today, but oh well. I ran well....Strano in Jason Burns Gran Sport has been the fastest SS car/driver in the nation this year (beaten Matthew Braun 3-4 times in a row (current SS national champion)....I paxed .88 behind him with a BSP pax. I'm content with that. Even with that, keeping in mind how competitive D.C. region is, I only pax'd 19 (out of ~240).
It made me feel better still when both Sam and Jason said the vette ran better today than it ever has...
I'll keep trying with this camera...maybe some in-car.

Well, my technique is improving in the little car, (Did better with my steering angle this time.) After our first three runs, I was in 4th 0.03 seconds off my brother. After lunch however, everyone picked up the pace. I was faster in the afternoon too....but I hit a cone on every run.
First run after lunch, I forgot to heat up the pads and punted a cone going into the first heavy braking zone.
Next run was better and my brother and I thought it was clean, but I knocked one down somewhere.
I could tell on my last run that I had shaved some more time off and was headed for my personal best of the day. I cleared all but one difficult element and was in the easiest and fastest part of the course. I wanted to make sure I didn't screw up the finish (only difficult part left) so I started looking for the finish line -thump- *curse* *curse* *curse*...and..... a solid finish!
Hit a damn cone in the easiest section of the course ! They say you can never look too far ahead, but when you mentally "skip" the section you are approaching to get a good look at the one after it....
Anyway, here are our fastest runs. My brother's on the left, with his clean run, and I'm on the right with my +1 run. (You can hear my audio drop out for a second when I hit the cone, so it SFW)
(He got me by 0.4 seconds)

Z1 only, great to see the awesome camera work for Atlanta. I was at points 5 at turner field about 2 months ago and the course was remarkably similar. We even had a rookie manage to slam her dads miata into that blue outfield wall. Only time I've seen someone have to call a toe truck from an autocross. You looked like you were faster in the Cooper than me in the z, good job.

We did have a beautiful S2k meet one of the poles on course, but the driver was ok and it looked drivable. (after they took the whole rear bumper cover off)

Wow, I hope the damage wasn't too severe to the s2k. I really don't like the turner field site. The rest of the ATL region events are at Atlanta motor speedway. And yes, the cobblestone 'infield' is a weird transition.

I tried a few different methods, but it felt like a losing game of "Marco Polo".
On my last run, I picked it up early as heck. (:39 on the vid) -Looked right at the cone at the end of the first wall when I had just started the sweeper and still got it wrong.
I'm used to managing (and hopefully minimizing) mistakes on course, but it's been a while since an element just kicked my @$$ like that.
