2012 SCCA T3 350Z Race Car Thread / Build
I started a thread like this in my local forum, but figured I'd start one here as well that catalogs the SCCA track 350Z that I bought a few weeks ago. The Z was a track car since May 2006, and was raced by Joe Hermes. He has a few track records with this car.
I have been probing our track guys familiar with prep and the rules - a LOT - so thanks to all of them for their guidance and patience (Mike, RacerBob and son, Laze1, Bill Stein, BKleeman, etc.)
It is currently sponsored by Z Car Garage, Porterfield Brakes, William's Auto Body, Smitty Racing, and hopefully MotorDyne in the very near future.
The car is being prepped for NASA's SpecZ, so the entire suspension will be removed and sold. The seat belts need to be replaced, door bars installed, safety net added, kill switch added, among other things.
1) Install door bars to roll cage
2) Swap suspension for SpecZ kit
3) Swap NISMO diff for Wave Trac diff
4) Replace radiator support
5) Replace exhaust
6) Replace current 10" wheels and 285 tires with 9/10 wheels and BFG R1 tires
7) Replace seat belts with current FIA
8) Driver's side safety net
9) SCCA and NASA logos on suit and Z
10)Check/purge fire suppression system
11)SCCA car tech and clinic 2/18
12)SCCA national license (completed)
13)SCCA school/qual 2/24-27
14)Attend NASA event 3/10-11
Full road racing schedule here: http://www.nasanorcal.com/index.php?...tion_schedule/
Other goodies to perform / answer:
- Check entire suspension, diff, etc., change all fluids (done)
- Remove headlight wiring
- Add oil pan spacer (allowed?)
- Coordinate side markers
- Trunk access (done)
- Check fuel system (remove worm clamps)
- Obtain NISMO front diffuser and rear wing
- REAR WING PURCHASE COMPLETE
- Rear diffuser complete
- Alignment
- Tune UpRev for 265HP
- Scale for 3175#

Door bars are a great idea. Get some longer ARP wheel studs from Summit Racing or JEGS. We dont have any breakage of studs since we switched over from the Camaro but they are much stronger. We torque to 80#'s.
Also before you go to the SCCA school download the waiver form that allows you to move up quickly with your past experience. Its on the www.scca.com web site. If you cant find it call SCCA at 800.770.2055 and ask them how to find it. You should be able to move up with one school and possibly one regional. Good luck.

I think this is the waiver you're referring to? http://www.scca.com:8080/documents/W...p%20Letter.pdf
Then I'd be allowed to run at any of the national events? "Upon completion of two Driver Schools and two Regional Races (you’re still a Novice for your first two), you are eligible to receive an SCCA Regional Competition License. You have two years from the date of issue to complete the Novice requirements. Once the requirements are met, send your completed Novice Permit, signed off by the event Chief Steward at your second Regional race; a copy of your Physical Exam; and $75 to the Central Licensing Department. You will soon be the proud owner of a Regional Competition License. After successfully completing four Regional events, you may upgrade to a National Competition License."
Thanks again for all your advice.

Scott...........thats the right form. When I was chief instructor at the Washington DC region I signed off a a few students who were exceptional and I think you will fit in that catagory. Just don't go off track more than once. One school should be enough and maybe you can get signed off after one regional too. Its worth a try.
You don't need the wing, we think its going to slow you down on long straights and we have never had any time when we thought the rear end was getting light at top end.

Thanks!
Good question - one that I don't have the answer to. Probably 150-200psi, at least for the dry, and lower in the wet, and higher in the front. I need to get some seat time to really feel them out.

The front difuser works great. We made some brake duct air catchers for the two vertical slots on each side. took an old pair of naca ducts and warped them to fit.
The rear diffuser is even more important as it lets a lot of air out compared to the stock rear bumper. On long fast tracks like the Glen and Road America the rear will help top speed for sure.

Is it me, or is this car a bit heavy? My 06 base model with a full tank, no spare, had a jack, no rear carpet, and full interior weighed 3300 exact. This being an 03 and track model should weigh considerably less no?

Scott...call Paul St.Clair and ask him what he sent us. The rear bumper took us a bit of time to put all the little pieces together without any instructions.
The SCCA T3 rules for last year said 3400#'s with driver and expect to get weighted about every race. Rob told me last weekend that SCCA took 25#'s off the car for 2012 but for some reason I can't dowload the new rules.
