Default Track Day seats

I track my Z about 6 times a year. Just DE, no TT or racing. One of the weakest links for me right now is the seats. I literally have a scab on my left knee from bracing against the door and I popped the left speaker grill out. In my GoPro videos it looks like I'm leaning all over the place in the turns and hanging onto the steering wheel.

I'm not ready to put a roll bar in it and the general consensus here is that harness bars are a no-go. So for now I would need to stick with the OEM shoulder restraints.

The car is my daily driver but I don't mind switching the seats out for track days so it does not have to be an expensive adjustable full time seat.

So does anyone know of a good supportive track seat that will still work with the OEM shoulder restraints?

I use an OMP seat, fixed back, works fine with OEM belt.

If you're only going to swap in it right before an event and then put the OEM seat back in afterward, I would think a cheap, but stable seat would be the right way to go.

Check out the Sparco Sprint. It's FIA rated with a great price point.

EDIT: Looks like the MOMO supercup is rated and relatively cheap as well.

In for a good solution. Planning on tracking my Z also, and the OEM leathers feel like a slip and slide in spirited driving.

There are good FIA and SFI approved seats that you can use on sliders as well. Most are fixed back but are still comfortable for every day use. Many of these can be used with the OEM Three point belts now, but have the slots for harnesses if you convert later. Corbeau makes a good one.

Sit in a few before you choose. I did that and finally yesterday found the seat I want (I think)

Thanks guys. The Sparco is pretty much what I've got in mind but it is fairly pricey. However I think there are made-to-order brackets that can be used to install it....maybe. I need to do some more research.

I'm also looking at the Kirkey 47300. It comes with a cover and is only $275:

There is another thread here in which one of these was installed in a Z. The person who posted it has not replied to further questions, but it looks good and it fits. However, a custom bracket is needed and Kirkey recommends that the seat back be attached to a cage/roll bar. The one in the post was not. But I don't think it would necessarily be any less safe than an OEM seat. I believe I can fabricate the seat base bracket but would prefer a pre-made solution.

Two other thoughts. 1) I don't think there is anywhere near me that I can sit in a seat to test before I buy. A friend of mine has the Kirkey in his '65 Mustang so I could at least sit in it. 2) I would not need it to be on rails since it would come out after the track day event.

You can take a Drive out to Apex Performance and try a few seats out. They are great people. Just be sure to buy from them if you find what you like.

They don't have Kirkey, but just about everything else

Glad you liked THSCC.

NP,
They are also at CMP a lot, so if you call before a track weekend they will bring it there for you to try out.

I really like the custom built Kirkey and UltraShield seats...I am tall and needed to get real low in the car for Helmet clearance...so this was a must for me.

Note: All seats with shoulder wings often will not fit in a stock car due to clearance issues with the Door panel. So test fit before purchase!!!!

I ran this seat for a long time in TT & HPDE with a Harness bar...so I am not sure how this will work with OEM belts I believe this is the UltraSheild "Spec Miata" model. I believe I used Sparco double locking sliders on a aftermarket base...I will try to remember who sells that...it is a company the sells seat bases for all kinds of cars...thinking And generic seat-to-slider mounts.

Update: this is where I THINK I purchased the seat base.. http://www.wedgeengineering.net/

Note 2: I ran this seat all the time...street and track and loved it...

DO NOT DISCONNECT THE WIRING UNDER THE SEAT WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY

If you do, you will cause an "Air Bag" CEL that you cannot clear...

When using an aftermarket seat, you have to insert a resister into the connector under the seat so the car thinks you still have an airbag. There are a bunch of threads on doing that mod...and NISMO used to sell a pre-made adapter...but I think they stopped doing that for liability issues.

[B]Note: This message is for cars that have Airbags in the seats...

I don't think all 350zs had airbags in the seats...so check you car for this option.

There is a simple airbag reset that can be done by cycleing the key. Done it many times.

FSM, don't know, i just searched on here or google.

All it is a a cycle of the key on and off and on sequence. Simple and works. I know just have a steady light, need to remove my clusted and make it turn off.

Kinda on subject, I run Corbeau FX1 seats and they are not FIA cert ( i guess they were in the past and Corbeau didn't feel like paying $XXX to keep the cert) but what size tubing should be seat back braces be?
