well for those who live in the central florida area i thought i would describe my recent experience at the Central Florida Racing Complex auto cross last weekend.
the group of people i went with and I had a great time, different format than i have been to in the past and sorta disorganized but a good time.
pros: close to home for me compared to where i normally go-about a 35 mile drive vs 54 miles to zephyrhills airport porsche club auto-x
they offer it during the day and at night during the month(we did night time event-nice cool weather so cars ran great)
track was a very simple layout that was easy to read with a pretty wide lane that allowed multiple ways for the path to be driven to find the best line, also was fairly high speeds, think i hit 65-70mph or more on the fast sections, i think it had about 10-12 turns and was about 5/8 a mile for 1 lap, maybe 7/10ths or so.
they ran 5 laps at a time for 3 sessions(1 warm up lap, 3 timed laps, and 1 cool down lap) so quite a few laps for your money($35)
no working required-you just pay, show up, listen to 5 minute meeting, do walkthrough, and they do a 2 minute tech inspection.
no having to wait at each corner with flag and walkie talkie etc..
cons: they post 7pm to 12am for the event calender, half of the support staff and event people did not show up until 7:30 or later so people thought the event was cancelled or something and left or turned around when they got to the facility, also did not get started until almost 9pm
could have done a crap load more runs if they would have gotten their crap together.
there were no emergency vehicles or safety crap that i saw, maybe they had a fire extinguisher some where, just had a dude on a four wheeler to drive out to the track to check when someone spun out or hit the wall.
i was 6th place out of about 35 cars, my one friend was 1st with a viper acr and it was his first time there, my other friend was 2nd and has a s2000 heavily modded with susp/brakes/tires/wheels upgrades and has been there 4 times. it was my first time there as well.
hopefully some of you will be interested and can join us in the future, we are going again saturday night 3/2/13 at 7pm
