Default Stupid Seat/Harness Questions

I'm just at the DE level but slowly moving up and thinking about TT in the next year.

I'm just now at the point where I need to start thinking about seats and harnesses. I know nothing about harnesses. Not ready for a cage yet but maybe a bolt-in roll bar or harness bar. Just assume roll bar for these questions.

I'm assuming the shoulder straps are looped around the roll bar tubing behind the seats. Where do the lap belt ends attach? And where do the anti-sub belts attach....five and six point?

If these mounting points have to be fabricated, how hard is it as a DIY?

Any thoughts on the Schroth 4 point belts with the ASM feature (just for DE use)?

I mounted my lap belts to where the O.E. belts go. This would not really be an option if your trying to keep your stock belts for daily drivability. The sub belts are a different story, I went through the floor underneath the seat and mounted them. There is not really a flat spot on the seat mount portion of the floor so I had a flat bracket welded in and used sub belt mounts from Pegasus to secure them. Passes Tech 60% of the time, every time. As far as 4 points go I don't think they are allowed any longer.

The Schroth 4 point is allowed at most DEs because of the ASM technology. If you're going the full harness route go with 6 point. You will need a roll bar with a harness bar to run any of these harnesses.

The inner lap belt mount needs to go to the trans tunnel. The sub belt is a pain as you mention, I have an angled 4x4 plate welded in for mine. My shoulder harness is off the Kirk rollbar that I bought thru BetaMotorsports

Yeah Mine goes through the tranny tunnel but with a backing plate that was also from Pegasus, forgot about that, its been a long day. Anything that's mounted to the seat will not pass tech.

It sounds like a PITA but I've got to do it at some point. So with a six point you have to have two anti-sub belt mounting points? I assume these go under the seat?

terrasmak, I've looked at the Kirk roll bar. My biggest concern with it is head room. This is also a concern regarding seats. From what I've heard, most of the available pre-fab seat mounts like Planted are going to have me sitting as high or higher than the stock seat. I will probably have to fabricate my own seat mounts.

Anyway, I'm 6'4" and have to have the stock seat all the way back and all the way down. Even then my helmet barely clears the headliner. I cannot tell from the pictures of the Kirk roll bar if my helmet would hit the main hoop with the seat mounted as far back as I can get it.

One way or another this sounds like a pretty serious DIY project to get me to fit in the car.

I'll search the DIY forums to see if anyone has any pics of how to do harness anchor points in the floor. When welding a plate in, is it welded under the car or in the floor board?

Not meaning to hijack the thread but can the Kirk roll bar be taken out without leaving any sign that it was in there?

The plates get welded under the car, never took pics of what is welded under my car.

Seat mounting, I used BuddyClub super high mount rails and had them cut down almost an inch into low mount rails. My head touches the roll hoop with my seat all the way back, but I'm only 6'1 so I have my seat fwd an inch or two.

With full custom rails my seat could be an inch lower , maybe more.

There will be 16 holes , and maybe cuts in the carpet and rear plastic depending on how much interior you run.

Hmm, Buddy Club makes what they call Super Low Down rails that they claim are "very" low. Not sure how this compares to Planted rails etc but the Buddy Club rails look like a complete package with seat mounting brackets included which is nice.

Are adjustable seat rails kosher in racing classes?

Those are the rails I have, I sat higher than stock. With some cutting, they are low mount.

They are in most classes but many specify double latch and depending on the seat also require seat back bracing. Back bracing can also be made adjustable.

That stinks. And that is what I've heard about the Planted seat mounts too. I think I'd rather try to make my own than cutting up $150 prefab units.

I don't understand why they don't make them as low as possible. Getting the seat higher is easy.

I will not need adjustable rails and if the Buddy Club rails are no lower than the Planted fixed mounts I'll either modify the Planted mounts or make my own.

It seems like the only real challenge to making my own low mount is the angle of the mounting bolts. I don't know what types of steel can be bent and maintain strength. Fortunately I've got a buddy that does a lot of fab work (built his own race car) and he can probably help.

I have a thread on here where I modified my Planted seat bracket to lower it. The front tabs are fine, it is the rear that they built the seat base to go over the stock locate pin rather than use the locate pin or provide clearance for it. Just cut the rear mounting tabs off and weld on flat plates with clearance for the locate pin. It is a very easy modification to get the Planted seat base laying directing on the floor. The harder part was getting the OMP seat side brackets to mount to the base where I wanted them and adding holes to lower the seat on the side brackets.

As for the roll bar, I went back and forth on what to do and finally went with a custom one. My car will be back in a couple weeks and I'll post pictures. I had the same concern you did with regards to getting the roll bar as high as possible and away from my head. I decided to remove the OEM headliner, have roll bar welded in with no headliner in the car, and then sent my car to a custom interior shop to have a two-piece headliner made to go in front and behind the bar. I got this idea from another car that I saw and it looked really clean while allowing the roll bar to be installed as high as possible. It will cost you extra $$ this way but it was done exactly how I wanted, not to mention I will have a nicer Alcantara headliner this way too.
