Ok so if I bought my car and it previously had a shift **** installed, then the stocker put back on, when I install a new one I don't have to do all this again right? I mean the adhesive is gone now correct?

I was all freaked before I tried to pul mine by reading all the horor stories and with a good set of vice grips on the shaft, it wasn't bad at all. Had to twist real hard and it was very tight twisting for several revolutions, but it came off.

It was hot as hell the other day. I decided to just turn the ****. It came off with hardly any trouble. I have an 06 though.

I just changed my 03 stocky to a Evo-R Ti ****. It was not too bad. Granted I had another person help me. It was really hard to turn for the first 2-3 revolutions but after that it came right off. Just like the others said a good set of vice grips and a huge set of plyers will make ur job easier. Also remember to wrap a towl around your stock **** if u want to save the finish.

Use a strap wrench from Loewes for the ****. It works great and it saves your ****.

Or just use one hand to twist it off and the other to hold the vice grips.

You get better leverage with a wrench. It looks likes the OEM **** is affixed with lok-tite blue.

I did mine after my car sat out in the sun for the day and it came right off. Didn't have to pull my shift boot up or anything.

I was under the impression that just turning the shift **** with a great amount of force could damage the linkage...

It could. That is why sufficient support should be placed on a lower segment of the rod so that only the **** turns and then eventually comes off.

So do I place the vice gribs on the rubber that covers the shaft underneath the console? I lifted it up and pushed the cotton aside but there's rubber covering the entirety of the shaft and I don't feel like the vice grab would sufficiently grab the linkage enough.

Over the rubber is fine so as long as the grip is tight enough.

I tried turning it a bit today but backed off because I couldn't tell if I was twisting the bottom vice or not....that and I couldn't get a proper grip on the top **** because i used the crappy vice for that one.... I will go look for a rubber one at lowes later today and try agn.

what you need to do is pop that shift boot piece up and vise grip the base of the shifter. with it secure where the shift pole doenst move and twist the shifter off
+1. That's exactly what I did to this past weekend. I own an 03. It's actually pretty easy. Took me about 30 mins (15 mins was to drive to Pepboys to get the vise grip).
