I must being a complete idiot.... these write ups on how to do a simple mod like remove a shift **** are great but something just isn't going in my favor!
no matter what i do the damn thing just wont come off! it feels like its welded on!!! despite the waste cloth, the shaft is getting chewed up from the vise grip and the **** isnt budging.
i wanna throw the new **** through a window....
any words of advice?

Use a pipe wrench, if you don't mind chewing up your OEM shift ****. That wrench is made to get corroded metal pipes apart, you'll get that thing off in 5 seconds. That's what I did with mine. Just make sure you get a good grip on the bar below so it doesn't turn it with vice grips.

Ok here we go.
It finally worked.
For those with the rubber thing over the shaft: just roll it down to expose the shaft. What i did then was i wrapped around 25 rubber bands on both sides of the vice grips. THIS WORKS GREAT! after that, i just attached them on the shaft. I used channel-locks on the ****, double wrapped a towel around it. And then i just twisted the ****. The vice grips held on the to the shaft perfectly. Here are some pics:

Just installed my shift **** and it was really easy, but I somehow managed to get my hand all cut up.
I didn't want to damage my OEM ****, so I twisted it off by hand, but I somehow managed to cut myself in the process. I went for a test drive right after and noticed my hand was wet. It's already dark out, so I didn't realize it was blood at first. Not sure what I cut myself on though.

I installed my Nismo shifter this weekend, it was not that bad. Used the vice grip and wrench to remove the stock ****. Thanks to this write up it was pretty simple.....Love the new shifter, makes for the some clean shifting~~
