after your 320 sanding you dont do a finer grit? curious if your wheels look really grainy after paint because of this?

I had a few hours to kill this past weekend. restored my extra rim, spent $28.57 on supplies.

1. clean rim
2. scuff rim (60 grit sand paper)
3. bondo the curb rashes and other blemishes
4. sand bondo (60 grit)
5. sand before primer (80-100 grit)
6. primer (2 coats)
7. sand the primer (1000 grit)
8. apply paint (3 coats)
9. wet sand paint (1500 grit)
10. apply clear coat
11. wet sand clear coat (2000 grit)

now time to see if this will stay

I believe the steps are all the same even with chrome, just make sure its scuffed up enough to get a good adhesion

meh. i plan on keeping my stock '06 wheels for track use, so i'll likely rattle-can them something goofy like olive drab or camo or what have you.

easy to change up color, and when they get nicks/etc. it's an easy repair job....and yes, track wheels WILL get nicks and such.

Just wondering if you guys painted the inner part of the rim as well? Or just kept it stock? Doing it soon, black, so just getting prepared

I am also wondering about visible sanding marks. Im thinking the primer smoothes it out, true?

Just thought I'd update this thread. I did this back in 2009 and have since put approximately 6,000 miles on the car since this mod. The paint has stayed on with no problems w/ chipping or peeling. Again, I don't drive a whole lot and I don't drive in the winter but this was a very simple mod and I'd tell anyone else to do the same if they wanted to fix up their wheels.

Too bad Griot's Garage no longer sells their wheel restoration kit, as it was the closest to an OEM finish I've ever seen. It was a great kit for ~$50, and I wonder why it's NLA.

I used Duplicolor Shadow in my stock chrome ones. I'm happy with the results.
