Default Questions about STOPTECH install...

Happy Tuesday!

Well, I finally installed my Stoptech (13") BBK on the Z. The installation went very well and was actually quite easy. The only mistake I made was that I actually did install one of the pads backwards!! It only took about twenty feet in the driveway to figure out that problem. Anyway, the whole job only took about three hours (not counting the 15-minutes to turn the rouge pad around).

So.. here are a couple of questions...

1. I did the bedding of the new pads exactly per the Stooptech instructions (with lots of smoke and stink!). Now I notice some black goop all around the inside of the wheel rims. Does the bedding-in process melt (?) some of the pad material, or what could that crud be?

2. Now the car cries out for the Stoptech BBK for the rears too. Can someone tell me if the Stoptech rear kit keeps the parking brake function just the same as the OEM stuff.

The car looks great...congrats on the kit!

As for the black goop, I'm assuming you're talking about caked-on brake dust. Yes, that is normal. It should be a powdery substance, unless you got it wet. The pads were heated up, and burn up... leaving a dusty residue when you bed them in.

Yes, our rear brake systems retain full parking brake functionality...OEM parking brake is kept and works the same. This rear kit would be what you're looking for:

REAR KIT: 328 x 28 mm Rotor/ 2 Piston Caliper

Rear Big Brake Kit Includes:

- 2 Piece Floating Directional 328x28mm AeroRotors
- 2 Piston ST-22 Calipers
- Includes ST-10 Parking Brake Caliper or Uses Stock Parking Brake
- Stainless Steel Brake Lines (Rear Only)
- Caliper Mounting Brackets
- Street Performance Pads (Rear Only)

PLEASE ORDER RACE PADS SEPARATELY
PLEASE CHECK WHEEL FITMENT USING CHARTS ON:
http://stoptech.com/tech_info/wheel_fitment.shtml

COMPATIBLE WITH 332MM AND 355MM FRONT KITS. FITS ALL STOCK WHEELS

83-646-0023-61 SILVER/SLOTTED $2,295.00

Black goop stuff may be the anti-squeel goop applied to the backside of the pads. I have some on my rims.

the bed in for the rears can be done easily, while i was at axis wheels, we installed the jumbo stoptechs on the rear and the bed in can be done on jackstands and by spinning the tires and holding the brakes

For looks, get the rear kit. But for performance and the $$, DON'T. I have the 14" drilled Stoptech kit on the front, and in the rear, drilled Stoptech OEM rotors, SS lines and Axxis pads. The car stops unbelievably as is. Braking over stock is night and day.

Good choice in brakes. I have the front and rear StopTech's and the parking brake works just like stock. The install of the rear is a bit more time consuming, but very easy overall.

The parking brake is a Rear Drum Brake system that is behind the rotor...

This is why the rear hat is so tall...

So changing the rear caliper does not effect the "drum parking brake"

I was thinking Silver for my Chrome Silver Z but decided on the 14" Fr X Drilled. They are beautiful and Stop unbelieveable. I like when people ask what is that big red thing. Obviously not car people.

Thank you very much for you kind compliments! I liked "the look" well enough to have a STOPTECH "logo" made in gold (to more-or-less match the bronze NISMO wheels) and put them on each side just behind the the wheel opening.

Ratz, you can hardly see it in the photo below!

Cheerz,

Rob

By the way, I guess that I should report on how the brakes work as well as reporting on how they look!

They are even better than I had expected.

We tend to think of brakes mostly in terms of brute-force stopping power... which the STOPTECHs certainly have. But, the most amazing thing about these is the degree of modulation that you get. Want just a little bit of braking... a little bet of pedal will do it for you! And, of course, everything between barely being able to tell that you are braking at all all the way up to a 'panic' stop is easily done with better pedal feel than I thought possible... much better than my '77 Porsche 911 was (but then that was loooooooooooooog ago).

Bye (again)
