Default better to have understeer or oversteer?

i think understeer will be better for the average drivers who dont see the track often but does a lot of canyon run or sharp turns. What do you guys think?

Understeer can be just as dangerous as oversteer. One is just easier to correct. If you enter a sharp turn too fast and understeer hard, you can go right off the road just as easily as with a car that oversteers. At least you'll get to see where your flying off the road though. That might not be the case with oversteer. If you've ever entered a turn to fast on snow, you know how scary understeer can be. A neutral car is the most forgiving.

Its what your used to I guess.. The Trick for getting through a slide in either is to just keep trying to steer in the direction you want to go and adjust your throttle accordingly.

I will tell you this though, Breaking the rear end loose on a FWD can be MUCH harder to recover from than on a RWD car.

Someone once put it best.

Understeer is where you see what you are going to hit. Oversteer you don't.

If you want to hit the wall with the front of the car, under steer is desired. If you want to smack the rear into a wall, I’d go for over steer.

I think slight oversteer in a car is, if not good, not that bad. Is there ever a time when having slight understeer is preferable to slight oversteer?

i think oversteer is more controllable if you know what you are doing...
counter steer, throttle inputs, etc etc...

Neutral is best. (All tires slide as the same time.)

of course neutral balance is best but it takes a lot of acheive it so a easier approach is to see which is better... oversteer or understeer since those are easier to achieve.

So can someone elborate what oversteer is like? I understand what understeer is. I just cant imagine slide and hitting something i dont see. Although i had my fair share of understeer so yeah...

Over steer is when the rear tires break traction. The rear attempts to slide around and circle the front tires.

The advantage to understeer is that (unless you're understeering because you've braked too hard) when you panic and get on the brakes, it's gonna give more traction to the front wheels and hopefully correct the situation. Unlike oversteering, where when you panic and get on the brakes you only aggrevate the situation. That's the reason that most cars are set up for understeer from the factory (well, that and the FF setup puts so much weight in the front that it's hard to avoid).

The advantage to a slight oversteer balance is that you can get the most effort out of your car under acceleration, which lets you drive a good late apex line as fast as possible. It's also helpful to be able to rotate the car with throttle lift/a brake tap, especially in a slalom. But it is harder to control and takes practice to be able to use an oversteer balance effectively.

If you want to drive on the edge, some oversteer is good. But it won't be a relaxing ride...

A GREAT example of oversteer is in the video of the RUF "Yellow Bird" at the Nurburgring. I'm tired, but I think you can find it on Google Video.

Personally, I like a tiny bit of understeer in the chassis set-up, and the ability to adjust to taste with the GAS pedal!

Understeer you brake and hope for the best. Oversteer, you counter steer and reduce speed. Personally, I prefer oversteer. Understeer is fine for grandma who will never push the car, but if you're driving a Z...
