Default OEM Brake Pad Shim question...

Just changed out my NON Brembo OEM brake pads for more OEM pads. I just took off the old ones and put on the new ones. I keep hearing about shims, but not certain if I need them. I did see a very thin metal clip on the old pad along with the wear tab. Do I need to take the thin metal off the old ones and put on the new ones?
THX 'cause I am confused as Hell.

FYI, I did read through the thread about how to change brake pads. Very useful, but a little confused on the shim issue.

Shims aren't critical but are there to reduce or prevent brake noise/squeak. I would use them. Brake squeak is annoying.

First time I ever changed my pads. Thanks for the info. Looks like I need to take the shims off my old pads and put them on the new ones.

You'll also want to put some Disc Brake Quiet between the back of the pad and shim. You can get this at any local auto parts store.
