Default Need new brakes...help

Ok so my brakes have been squeeking for a while now, but i just noticed some grinding noises. So i'm taking the car to Nissan on monday and I guess i'll probably need new brakes right?? If I do, should I get nissan to buy them and install them or will they just rip me off? I want brembo's but they are probably gonna cost me quite a bit, anyone have any ideas for how much more than stock brakes? Are brakes suppose to wear this fast? My car only has 19000km's on it so 11806miles. What do you guys think I should do considering that i'm on a budget. and just to be sure, brakes aren't under warranty are they? thanks

Go with the Hawks if you want less dust and less squeek. Go with OEM pads for better bite.

DIY and save...dealer will charge an arm and a leg for brembos.

I replaced my OEM front brakes at 48,000 miles. I cannot tell if you need pads or rotors or both without measuring them.

The Hawk HPS pads have less initial bite as the OEM pads, so be warned. I'll be going to the HP+ when these are done.

So i took my car into nissan today and got an estimate. They are charging me $620 CAD so $540USD for the two front rotors and pads with install! So I'm just going to order front and rear hawk pads along with 2 front oem rotors. What do you guys think? I'm not too familiar with brakes, and have never worked on them, but I found a good DIY for brake pads. Is it easy to change the rotors? any special steps? again, I've never worked on brakes before. thanks

Here’s a secret: penetrating spay on the...

calliper bolts
rotor bolts
rotors

Let it sit for 20 minutes minimum.

^^ Davidv speaks the truth (always)... I would add a breaker bar to the list.

it is pretty eay to change them. since you have non brembo and maybe driving in the snow belt I would think about renting or borrowing a three jaw puller to deal with a stuck rotor.

LOL. The 2 bolts on the back of the calliper are mothers! Torque must be 110 pounds!

harbour freight got those jaw pullers...inexpensive btw.
one of my front rotors was loose when i was replacing the pads and the other one was on pretty tight. i guess the rear ones will be a b!tch to remove.

starting to contemplate installing myself... what kind of grease do i need to apply on the brakes? and are the rotars that hard to remove? and how can i torque the bolts at 110 pounds when im screwing them back on?

a breaker bar or an impact wrench is required to loosen the bolts and you will need a torque wrench to tighten those 22mm bolts up front. If your not handy with tools or mechanically inclined, i wouldn't recommend DIY. Some rotors are pretty much frozen in place and even some seasoned mechanics might have a hard time removing them. You don't apply grease to the brakes... use liquid wrench or WD-40 to loosen the bolts before hand.
i once used WD-40 to soak the bolts the night before removing the exhaust in the morning.

Hawk pads are good, typically quiet and not too much brake dust. Use HPS for more street usage or HP+ for the track enthusiast.

You might also want to consider something like Endless or similar pad. Endless has a more streetable pad and a few lines that are more track oriented.

Being where you are a dealer could be quite expensive to do a brake job. Oftentimes a local mechanic or, as mentioned, doing it yourself will be much more economical.

While you're at it, this would be a time to upgrade to a better brake fluid (i.e. Motul RBF600 or Super Blue). These fluids have a higher boiling point, giving your a firmer pedal and better braking during spirited performing much better than any conventional fluid.
