Thumbs down Resurfacing stock rotors

Im getting my front and back pads replaced this week and Im a little worried my rotors my need resurfacing. I stopped by a nissan dealership just to get a quote on how much it would cost.

The guy in the service department never got around to giving me a price he just stated that he always has to replace stock rotors...they always become to thin if you try to resurface them. Im just curious to know if anyone here has gotten their stock rotors resurfaced and if this service guy is feeding my BS to just buy new rotors.

im not really interested in putting new pads on and the rotors eating right through them due to the fact that they need replacing, resurfacing, and or turning. Oh and theres only a little over 14k miles on these new stock rotors and front pads.

At the moment my rotors dont have any criss cross scratches, burn marks, nor does my steering wheel shake when I apply the brakes. Theres is only a small lip at the end of my rotor..I would go as far as to say 1-2mm...they just arent completely flat anymore.

if there's no brake roughness i don't see a reason you should turn or replace your rotors when you replace your pads.

unless you happen to be going to a race pad like carbotech who says a new transfer layer is needed.

Your service guy is thinking "Why turn the rotors for $15 when a brand new rotor is only $25 ???"

new rotors after 14k is BS but you stated there was a 1-2mm lip and uneven wear... i just replaced mine at 68k they were unevenly worn on the fronts so i got 4 all new drilled and slotted for like $175 shipped from r1concepts.

a stock front rotor actually fost $122, got a price from the parts department..So it will probably cost over $320 counting labor to replace the rotors on the front.

Keep in mind that as little a 2mm of wear is the service limit for rotors. If you turn them, they can warp when they heat up. That's why dealerships won't just resurface rotors to the limit- too many comebacks.

I didn't do either. My brakes went, but it was at the warning track, not causing any damage to the rotors. The brake job was probably the easiest I have every done. C Clamp and jack stands were my best friend.

I replace mines with Posi Quites and its a night and day difference. My emergency works like a champ again!

I think its a matter of trusting myself here..HAH!..I woudlnt dare replace parts of do maintainence on them until seeing someone do it...lets just say a large amount of times...Thats just how Iam..I have never had a chance to dive into cars and learn repairs and maintainence.

Its super easy to replace brakes, I think that was the first mechanical thing I did. If you are not confident, just get a friend to come over and show you what to do. Ive done it for a couple of my friends for brakes and other small things.

As to the resurfacing topic: there is a minimum thickness that the rotor has to be. The person with the lathe will mic them and see if they are thick enough. If so, he'll resurface. Take the rotor off and go to a parts store with a brake lathe. They can measure it and resurface $10 each.

Yes.....Before I had my BBK, I had StopTech cross drilled on front and back with my oem calipers. The Stop Techs are a direct OEM replacement size.

Leave the rotors alone, just replace your pads. You'll be fine...

I got my hawk pads put on the front and back...as well as my front rotors resurfaced...I cant be happier...I think its actually the first time in 2 years my Z hasnt had squeaky brakes..In the end it ended up being $120. Installation of pads and resurfaced front rotors...Yall can be the judge of that..I expected it to be around that price anywho.

Only thing Iv notived is I have to start slowing a little earlier then usual. Iassume this is due to the harder brake pad material...Im not really sure though.

The Rotors on the 03 to 05 Z's aren't thick enough to resurface very much, so the Nissan mechanic told me. That is why they recommend change the rotors out if they have a little wear on them.

Correct.

Minimum thickness for regular front rotors: 22.0 mm
Minimum thickness for regular rear rotors: 16.0 mm

Some rotors can be turned. Some cannot. Minimum thickness is measured after turning.

Is that for the stocks, Brembos, or both?

I had some bad wear on mine at 6K on the new Z and got them to cover it. if you want some after amrket ones for NON brembo, there are some good slotted ones out there. especually right around the same cost as OEM.
