4 jack stands if you want the entire car up at once. or you can use two jack stands to do to at a time. so i used a jack to lift the car and then slid the jack stands underneath the car where it could support the frame of the car. just make sure the jack and the jack stands can support the car. i used a 2 1/4 ton jack and stands with equals to 4,250 lbs. the z weighs about 3,000lbs.

ok..that was a bit confusing..so let me understand this
correct me if im wrong
you had a total of 3 jacks
1 to lift up the car in the front and then put 1 jack stand on each side near the front wheels and then paint both front calipers
then you waited for the fronts to dry and put the wheels back on
and then u jacked up the back and did the same thing
or did you have the whole car (all four calipers) off the floor at one time???
what kind of jacks do i need and where can i get them

you can get stands at pepboy, autozone, ect. I got 2 or 3 ton, not sure, technically they only hold somewhere between .25 and .5 of the weight on each, but some wiggle room is nice.
you can use the factory jack to hold up the car in this case, one condition tho. do not put anything under the car you dont like, and you are risking dropping the car. factory jacks are not too steady. so it is never recomended to go under a car supported in any way by a factory jack(or any jack for that matter). but you dont have to go under the car here, but a stand would be preferable.
anyway, they sell stands in pairs, so you couldnt possibly have 3. I personally prefer to do half the car at a time if its feasable for the project, I just feel safer having 2 wheels on the ground. also with all 4, you start running into level problems, the car rocks... its a generally bad feeling to have with a 30,000$ car.

right..thats why i didnt want more than 2 wheels off the ground at once
so then i guess im gonna buy 2 jack stands (3 ton??)
ok...im an idiot...whats the difference between jacks and jack stands
...and whats the best place to put the jack stand without screwin up anything under the car
...so assuming i get to teh part where i have my car up with 2 front wheels off
i would have to paint teh calipers..wait for tehm to dry ...then put the wheels back on..then repeat on the rear
will the g2 paint kit last long enough
sounds like its much easier to have a shop do this
will they even bother/??

buy a set of two jack stands (they come in pairs in a box) 2 ton will do fine

the jack lifts the car, pumps it up. the jack stand just holds it there

anywhere there is a frame

I think it would be easier to do one side at a time, rather than front/back. jack up the right, place stands under it, paint, dry, put tires back on and lower. repeat on left side. it will last a long time
sounds like its much easier to have a shop do this
if you are really that lazy
will they even bother/??
of course, if you pay them[b]

just to clarify.... i had 2 pairs of jack stands (4 total)
and 1 jack. so i had all four tires off at once and painted all the calipers at once. its really not that hard to do it yourself.

well the g2 paint comes in a little can. it is enough to do all four calipers. however if you don't use the paint all at once, it will dry and harden. so i suggest you do all four of them at once (within 24hrs.) but if you really want to do 2 at a time you can, just don't mix the paint until you are ready to do the other 2.
you dont need to wait for it to dry to put the wheels back on. just paint, put em on, the rims dont touch the calipers. just be careful you dont touch em when putting the rims onto the studs.
then do the other side... shouldnt take too long.
there are points to support the vehicle with; they are marked with notches in the flange. problem is, the jack is notched to fit this flange, the jack stands you get need to also fit around this notch.
tho this isnt a difficult job, any time you lift 30,000$ worth of 3000lbs of metal, you want to do it right. you drop it and youll cry.
a shop will just charge you labor, they can jack the car up and get the tires off in about 7 minutes tops. then however long it takes to paint, and about another 7 minutes to put the tires back on. they charge between 60 and 80$ an hour for labor.

I just recently placed my Z on four jack stands to replace my tires. I wasn't sure at first because the designated jack points seemed too narrow, but I guess those are the CG points. It was actually quite easy to do.
