I'm looking to upgrade my non-brembo brakes on my performance Z. The three options I am considering are Front only, probably Stoptech, 4-wheel, stoptech as well, or the stock 4-wheel brembo setup. I'm looking for a setup for moderate track use. The only way I want to get the 4-wheel stoptech's are if the performace to cost ratio outweighs the fronts by a great amount. I think fronts only would be the most feasable option, but I want your opinions.
As Victor said, the 4 wheel StopTech's are pretty much the top of the heap as far as serious track work is concerned. The decision depends on a number of things, though...
How frequently do you plan on tracking the car? A front only kit might suffice if you only plan on tracking occasionally. However, you'll most likely have more rear pad replacements than you would with a 4 wheel kit.
Will you be using race rubber, or street tires? Braking forces, and the resulting heat generated, are higher with stickier rubber.
How hard on the brakes are the tracks you're going to be driving most often? If 9 times out of 10 you'll be running a track that isn't too terribly hard on brakes, you may be better off trying a few other things first before investing in a new kit...new friction material, motul fluid, StopTech SS brake lines...possibly even cooling ducts, etc.
What size wheels do you run, 17 or 18? If you are running 18's, which you probably are since you have a performance model, then you could get the 14 inch front only StopTech kit...has a bit more thermal capacity than the 13 inch kit. Adds even more bling factor as well.
There have been a number of folks who have found the track model Brembo's inadequate under heavy track abuse, and replaced them with various StopTech kits. If you are serious, and think your skill will progress to the point where you'll eventually want to do the same, play it safe and just get the full 4 wheel StopTech kit now. You'll be happy you did later...you won't have to lose money when you resell the brembos, and you won't have the hassle of refitting a whole system (or paying someone to do so), downtime with the car, etc.
One other thing to consider is the support you will receive with each purchase. I doubt you'll get much help from Nissan or Brembo if you run into any trouble, or need technical advice/assisstance...you most definitely will with Stoptech. Do you really want to be left hanging with a safety problem or concern?
My advice...assess you future needs now, and save yourself some headaches. Think about how much those future headaches will be worth in terms of $ now. Then you'll be able to make the right choice for you. Good luck.
