Shock life VS coil choice.
Was arguing with one of my friends on this...
How much mileage have you done with your OEM shocks before they get blown or very bumpy. This, along with aftermarket springs with a mild drop. maximum 1 inche. ?
For example, my Z is a 2003 with 12k, I recently installed GF210 springs. How long my OEM shocks will do the job, assuming I drive normally.
Thanks.

Stock dampers have a usable life of around 60k miles, depending on the drop and spring rate they will wear out faster. 1 inch drop is actually a lot and will wear them out really quick (10k? miles) same will springs with higher spring rates.
I am at 78K on my 03 with the stock shocks. They seem to be doing OK although I am hearing a little thump in the rear, passenger side, low speeds only. It doesn't sound like a blown shock but it could be on its way out. If 60K is the limit for stock shocks, seems like I am already on borrowed time.
Take the rear out and compress it by hand. You will be shocked, no pun intended, how easy it is to compress it.
Car manufacturers want to put on the least expensive shock that they can. Even a cheap KYB shock is going to be better than OEM new shocks.

or you might find that it's compressed and won't rebound, or you might find that it rebounds really slow...all of which are signs that they are done
40k miles and counting on my HKS RS coilovers - I ditched the stock shocks extremely early in the cars life
