Default Coilovers or springs?

This is my first post so bare with me. I have friends that are happy with both but none of them have Z's, So I need some advice from some fellow Z enthusiasts. I want to drop it about 1.25" and I know springs are a little cheaper and thats what I'm leaning towards but i want to know from someone that has them or has had an experience with them before i just go buy them. So if anyone can help me out it would be appreciated, thanks alot!!

in the past month I have been going between springs vs coilovers. I was decided on springs because of speed bumps but I wouldn't be happy as it only seems to go about 3/4 of an inch in most cases. most people also say that you will end up having to change the stock shocks soon anyways so best to do it properly the first time.
Taking the advice - I am going with either stance or bc coilovers

daily driver
track, occasional or every chance you get
budget
most people that get coilovers know they need/want them..........
speed bumps scare me?? i dont wanna bottom on anything.....
Why do you want to do it? just lower so it looks cool? firmer ride?

if its a daily driver......just slap some springs and be happy...

give us more info........what are you intentions? goals?

I went with springs before coilovers. i initially just wanted a simple 1.2 drop, then after looking at so many threads of aggressive wheels, slammed rides, and after market shocks pretty much the same price as coilovers, I switched over. I honestly think just buy coilovers right of the bat. You save the money your going to use for after market shocks, and you have adjust ability. Just because you have coilovers does not mean you have to slam it to the ground, you can still have your desired 1.2 inch drop, and if you decide its to low you can raise, or if its not low enough you can drop. Thats another thing with springs is every spring is different its says it will drop you 1.2 but only give you like 1. With coilovers you don't have to worry about all those factors. Hope that helps a little

By the time you buy springs and shocks you are at just about the same price as coils.

Just get coils and set to the height you want

Just get coilovers. Sure springs are cheap, but you have to buy front and rear camber kits, depending on how low you go, and since you want more than an inch drom you need it. Your gonna have to get the car aligned, and get after market shocks. If you don't buy camber kits, your gonna spend money on tire wear, so just get coilovers.

^ Regardless of how he lowers the car to 1.25 inches that he wants.....He will need a rear camber kit(camber arm and 3.0 degree toe bolt) and if he wants to correct front camber he will need front upper control arms...most dont buy the front UCA's, but thats up to him...

It is my daily driver and i don't want it slammed (at least anytime soon due to it being a daily). I just got my rims about a week and a half ago and they are 18's opposed to my stock 17's but they are more low profile. so i just think an 1.25" will take care of that little gap. I wasn't aware that I had to buy other parts along with the springs, is that right? as far as alignment and such im not worried about that. my good friend works at a dealership so its free =) lol. thanks for all the help so far!

I would just get springs with the desired drop and some good shocks like koni yellows or bilstein. Many ppl underestimate the importance of good shocks like konis or bilsteins. coming from the world of 240s where everyone has cheapo coilovers (stance, megan, etc), I wasn't impressed with the shocks they come with, you're probably better off in terms of comfort and "extracting grip" with konis or bilsteins.

1.25 inch drop on a low sitting sports car is slammed. Stock shocks only last around 60k miles, they only last a few thousand miles when paired with a really low spring.

Did you do it right by also doing the camber kit?

Something people never talk about with coil overs is every time you make a slight change to them you will need to do another alignment it you're a track guy coil overs are great but for most street people its a one time set and forget thing. I have springs on my car and 5 years later have yet to have any reason to adjust my height

op post up some pics and watch your tire wear

The only advantage coilovers have over a good spring/shock combo si the ability to adjust height, and due to this the ability to corner balance. I had a shock/spring combo for a few thousand miles, love it. I track my car more now, and I want a coilover so I can get a corner balance.

I think your forgetting a few things.....

Height
corner balance.......check.....provided you have adjustable endlinks, cornerbalance sure...

ability to change spring rates.....ie. swap springs for different tracks...
ability to preload springs front, none/soft in rear...etc...
ability to have different spring preloads front and rear with different rated springs.
ability to make adjustments trackside.....
if true coilovers - ability to have toe arms and lock out washers.
etc...etc...

All comes in the territory of adjsutability. Why can't you easily change springs on shock/spring setups? I guess a better question would be, how are they that different?
