Default emergency brake light coming on under heavy breaking

On my way to work this morning I hit the brakes really hard and noticed my emergency brake light coming on. Has this ever happened to anybody before?

I suspect you have low fluid caused by worn pads. The light does remind you to take off your emergency brake, but it also warns you of low fluid (which is the most important function) of that warning light.

Agreed. Check out your brake pad thickness. As brake pad material wears away, the fluid has to take up the space of where the pad material initially was.
