I just changed my rotors/pads for the first time myself, and now there is a grinding noise even when not braking. Sounds like brakes are fully releasing or something. These are non-brembos by the way.

Is this normal after a rotor/pad replacement? What could I have screwed up during the process?

If I jack the front up, I can spin the wheels and hear grinding. They used to spin freely as far as I can remember.

Any ideas?

I tried to bed them in by Hawks (have the HPS) instructions... but still the same noise.

I have not tried to bleed them yet, as I have never done that before either, and don't think I have the right tools, but no lines were disconnected, just the brake fluid cap removed while putting in the piston.

 

No, this is not normal; I've done alot of pad/rotor replacements and have never had that problem; are you sure you put the pads on correctly? Are you sure you have the correct replacement parts? Does the calipers work (can you push them in) .. It's hard to troubleshoot without seeing the problem.

 

Getting ready to take the wheels off again and I will take a couple pictures. The pads have a metal backing on them (shim?) already so I would assume that side goes away from the rotor. Pretty sure I got them in the correct way, but I will double check.

Going to check the dustshield too and see if for some reason that is hitting the back of the rotors.

 

Is it happening on all four corners or just 1 or 2?

 

Dust shield is rubbing on the rotor.

 

I was thinking that too...but normally he wouldn't be touching the shield at all. If the rotor was uneven (not properly torqued down or mounted), then he would get pulsation of the pedal.

I also have the same problem. I replaced my pads and rotors with R1 rotors and Hawk HPS pads.

Fronts. I have access to lift a lift and took another look today. Brakes feel fine and grab hard. Once on a lift, it feels like the pad is rubbing the rotor. Not much resistance at all though. Spins freely but, just just a very slight rotor/pad rub. No binding.

Rears. Same as front. It's the E-brake messing with my head. Sounds like the e-brake is still rubbing after I loosen the adjustment dial as loose as it can go. About 5-7 turns tight, I won't be able to move the rotor by hand.

I'm gonna go back on the lift this week and see what I can come up with. I'll let you know.

 

Doesn't really sound like a problem there...maybe slighly thicker pad? It's going to wear down pretty quickly.

 

^^ as many said above it was indeed the dust shield. Thanks! A little bending and all is well now.

 

How did the dust shield get bent in the first place?

 

my brakes were the same way when I put them on. Just a bit of driving around took care of it.

 

Don't have a clue, it was on the passenger side upper most part by the caliper, the tip was just bent in a tad. Everything is good to go now.

 

I just had this happen to me
installed hawk hps and stoptech slotted and then started driving and on top of the squealing there was a grinding noise. I was pretty freaked out, but assumed that there would be something... SO I went to bed them in and it still wouldn't go away. I didn't want to stop during bed in process so I drove around for a bit and eventually turned a corner and hit a bump, noise vanished, or it was coincidence. I think wheels weren't torqued to spec, or not properly all the way, which they are now.

I had to google things while I was going through the process which helped a lot.
