You guys are really making me change my mind on a 06 350Z!!
The Z is like any other car or product -- it'll have problems. But, just remember, it has more good things going for it than most other cars. The '06 models have been refined so any issues with previous years have been resolved (tire feathering, window grease, etc.). I have an '06 and I have not had any problems with it, even after installing a good amount of mods in the short time I've had it.
And as far as going from a 3000 GT to a 350Z -- this is all I've got to say:
RELIABILITY? NISSAN > MITSUBISHI

I am fairly certain VR-4's were only made in AWD

But again after reading all of these threads about the oil consumption and terrible customer service I am confused!! So do I really have a reason to be?
If the 06 350Z seem to have a lot of problems are there any year that is the best? 03, 04, or the 05 years? I know that there is not one car that is perfect and that their will always be someone complaining about it. I just want to find a fun to drive reliable car that is worth the money.
Really just looking for some advice. I like the look of the 350Z and like the power it has (eventho I wish it had more) I just want to make the right decision when buying my new car. Any help? Do I have a reason why I should not buy a 350Z?
all the models are good except for the 03, the 350z is more reliable than most cars out there. if your really looking for speed go with an sti, ive driven one and its a complete monster

I have a 2003 touring with 37K and have never had one problem. Only in the shop for oil changes and 30K scheduled work. Never burned any oil between oil changes. Like some else said only people who have problems post stuff and they make up less the 1% of the 350Z owner population. I recently test drove a Porche Boxter and realized why I love the Z.

I certainly DON'T see the Z as a step down from a Mitsu 3000GT...Nissan is an arguably better Japanese brand and if the Mitsu is FWD (thought it was RWD?), then the Z is actually a step UP to a REAL RWD Sportscar anyway.
BTW...How many 3000GT's or Dodge Stealth's do you see on the road?? I RARELY see either one...Hmmm???

What DIDN'T you like about the Porsche Boxster BTW?? I am considering that in the future as a alternative convertible choice rather than the ZR.
what i think is funny about the whole oil consumpsion thing is I have a 2004, and do not have this problem. what i am thinking is that the disposable crush rings used for the oil drain plug are being reused, or left out completely. hence the loss of oil. but that is IMO of course.

Again - BMW or Mercedes reliable? Take a look at JD Power you will see Mercedes is right next to Nissan for problems per 100 vehicles.

Mine was burning about 1 quart every so often. More than 1k though. I switched to Royal Purple and it's fine. 
I think maybe it just depends on oil quality. That BS about synthetic being for higher mileage that people always say isn't true. Use synthetic in the 06 and you'll probably be ok. If not, there's always a warranty. If I had to choose between a used car or a "new" car at the end of its time, I'd take the newer 1. You might end up buying someone else's problems with anything before 06 unless you know the person who had the car.

350Z is an awesome car. As far as reliablity issues, most of it is rattles and noises. The VQ motor has been around for a very long time and for the 350z its been redefined for more power with higher compression. More then half the popluation of Z owners will beat the crap out of there cars then later complain about things breaking. It goes for almost all or all sports car.
IMO the VQ is a rock solid motor. I use to own a RSX Type-S and its a honda motor (k20a2) and its one of the most reliable motors out there. If you go on clubrsx you'll see a million post about oil consumption!? But whatever, there are many picky people out there.
As far as the 06 Z oil comsumption goes there could probably be over 5,000-20,000 motors they built with bad piston rings? who knows and they probably caught the problem down the road. I work for a automotive manufactoring plant that makes OEM parts and everything gets quality tested but we crank out over 1,000 parts a day a shift, so parts get overlooked and some may be not the same quality as others.

1) Yup! Message boards are mostly about *****in' and complaining.
2) My '06 Enthusiast (after 6 months and 7500 miles) has been troublefree
3) Most (but NOT ALL) of the owners complaining about oil consumption are still in the first 1-3K miles. It is not unusual for an engine to use a little oil until the rings seat in. Here is my experience (from a previous post).
"My car used 1 quart from 0-1000 miles, 1 quart from 1000-3000. I changed the oil at 3000 (5-30 Mobil 1), and now at 7000 (4000 miles) it has used 3/4 quart.
I expect oil consumption going forward will not exceed 1 quart per 5K."
4) And note that from all the info posted here, Nissan appears to have a very liberal policy about replacing engine for those who do experience problems.
If you want a Z, go get one!
