Default extra money for an '07 worth it?

Here is my deal.

First and foremost I *DID* search, but I guess I wasn't using the correct search terms because I either came up with nothing or way too many threads to find a succinct, and simple answer (maybe such a thing does not exist).

I am in the market for a Z. At this time, I can't see myself spending the money for a new one, so I am looking at a used Z. What I am looking for is anything above the Base trim, and 6-spd. As tempting as the prices are for '03's - '06's, I wonder if the HR engine is worth it to get an '07.

1. I have never nor will ever street race.
2. I have never nor most likely will ever take it to the track
3. no plans for any serious amount of modding....perhaps a JWT and plenum spacer if anything.

It will be a daily driver for me (probably garaged for parts of the winter when the roads aren't the best).

That being said, what is the real benefit to owning an '07 over the other years other than the "issues" that others years had (oil consumption, tire feathering, etc).

How does an '07 "feel" compared to earlier models with regards to the feel of the clutch, the responsiveness, the noise inside the cabin, etc.

Again, I am not looking to get flamed here and if this has been asked a billion times, I apologize. Politely lead me to the correct thread if you find one, or please respond here with some suggestions.

Thank you!

Well I test drove a used 06 and bought an 07 and IMHO I doubt you will feel "cheated" going with an older one doing what you sound like you are going to be doing. That being said, I am glad I went for the 07. Personally I like the "hood hump"

All of the years have some issues. The Oil consumption problem to me at least is the worst of the issues because if you buy used you really won't know its a problem until you have had it for a few weeks.

Like anything else thats said here YMMV

Get the 07. It doesn't have oil consumption issues like the older engine did. Also it is much faster and smoother.

Get the 07, make sure it has the clutch recall issue addresses if the VIN falls in the affected range.

I love my 07, cabin noise can get loud at times, especially over 4000, but a good stereo will fix that. Handles like a dream, is plenty fast and looks great.

Now I am really torn...

My preferred color is black. I found a pristine 2004 black touring (bose stereo, homelink rearview mirror, leather, 6 speed at a good price (21k)

I also found a base 2007 for 22k but it is grey, and of course just base. There are no other 2007's in my price range within 500 miles. ($26,000 and under).

I am not sure that a 2007 base would be a better deal than an 04 touring in the color that is my preference.

ugh, why can't this ever be easy?!?!?

How many miles on the 04?

I'd have the 04 checked out by a mechanic and run a Carfax. if okay, I'd go for it.

Given you live in snow/ice country I think you want LSD & TCS that come with Enthusiast and above.

37,000 miles and a clean car-fax (that means its only worth as much you want to put faith into carfax).

Yea Carfax hardly ever shows the car having a accident, etc.

My Pathfinder was new, and just got it's plates. I then got into a frontal accident, airbags, etc all went off. It had 15k of damage. It never showed up on carfax. Neither have any of our cars that had a fender bender of some type.

Carfax can't be relied on alone; that's why I included having an inspection by a mechanic done in my response

i'll take 25.2k, leaves 800$ for shipping to you in Mass, if it is more then 800$ ill pay the diff. You then get a 07 Touring w/ volk rims, only 15k miles on it.

Let's make a deal!

Wish I could, but I need to sell my scion tc first and I doubt you'd want it for a trade (plus cash).

Nice car you have though. Good luck in Alaska.

If you set a budget I think that will answer your question. For the same price and miles I would pick a 2006 Touring over a 2007 Base. Just depends on your budget and needs.

Set your priorities. If color is most important than go for color. No point in settling for white at a “good price” if you want black. There's no “good deal” on white because thats not what you want.

Another worthwhile post by davidv. I agree.

With such wisdom, you'd think he could give up digging up old threads from the grave.

With these things considered you wont really benefit from an 07. Its a little smoother yes but besides that there's not really much else to gain from getting an 07 if your not into racing.

+1 You will probably appreciate the extra features and amenities in a touring more than the speed of a base model HR. Only thing to be aware of is 06 oil consumption issues.
