Question Trying To Decide...

Ahhh... I need some opinions here. Yes, I know I should decide for myself, but I need some opinions...

I have been shopping around, waiting for the perfect car and for my down payment to get set. I have $2000 for a down payment. Now, before you tell me to just "save" my money and get a newer car, or the 370z, in the next two years -- I'm not interested in that.

I've narrowed my decision down to either Daytona Blue or Redline Red in the 350z, Touring model, with Frost Leather. A/T or M/T isn't too big of a concern.

I have found a 2004 Daytona Blue Touring [Frost Leather] M/T with 31,000 miles in my town. They're asking $17,988 (way TOO high). I checked it out on a Sunday two weeks ago, it seemed pretty spotless. However, I'm going in tomorrow afternoon to take a test drive. Obviously, I know to look for tire feathering, gear grinding, and the window motors.

I ran an autocheck on the VIN and everything is clean, two owners, the second owner being the dealer. I feel like I could walk in there and get them down to the $13,000 range. I am hoping for less. Opinions? I've been reading and searching for what people have been paying and that's a pretty consistent price.

you seem very specific, and somewhat stingy. I know they are probably asking a bit too much, but you would be lucky to get them under 15k, imo.

what is that a consistant price *of*? that model is touring... 13k could probably net you a base, enthusiast, around that age and mileage.

Now that the weather is improving 350Z prices will increase. But $18,000 is a ridiculous highball price.

worst they can say is no anywho - just throwing it out there so you don't get your hopes up.

they ask a highball price

you offer a lowball price

you settle on a reasonable price.

thats how the negotiation usually goes down

I think if I could get it in the $15,000 range then I would be happy, because it is exactly what I want. But, I figured to aim low so we could meet in the middle .

I forgot that this car was a 2004, not a 2003, and there are more 03's going for the 13k range. My bad.

We will see after tomorrow...

considering that some people are getting base 08s/07s for around 19-20k, i think you can get a better deal

Go for it! Weather plays no role in this economy, it's a buyers market. Set a price in your head of what you're willing to pay and stick to it. Walk away if you need to because I'm sure they'll be calling you back to work out the deal.

P.S.-I would shoot for maybe 14.5k. 13k just seems too low.

Thanks for all of the advice! I really appreciate it. I agree that the 14.5 is probably a good place to start. I guess it is just kind of daunting to try to talk them down from 17.9? I guess that is there tactic!!

It is funny though... They have a 2007 Redline Base with 7000 miles for the exact same price. I like them both, but I just don't understand how they could think that a 2003 is the EXACT same price as a 2007, regardless of whether it is a base or not. I'm guessing they're trying to sell the 2007 first? I really dislike dealerships!

the jump up from base to touring is pretty drastic, option wise. it's up to you to decide what options you want in your car though.

ultimately I'd be happier with an HR engine, so it would be hard to not go for an 07

The 07 is gone.
I just test drove the 04, and the inside was filthy, stains, hadn't been detailed, and the front two fenders had been bent next to the door/hood, and the paint was chipped. Those two problems WERE NOT there two weeks ago when I looked at the car on a Sunday.... So I'm steering away from this one. Also, they told me they wouldn't budge from the 17.9 because that is retail for the car and it has such low miles.

They're out of their minds. They did get my number, I guarantee they're calling me tomorrow.

ha ha ha.. they will call you. they want to make business, but they want to make money too.

I would look for another 07 somewhere else. HR ftw! I wish I hadn't bought my Z when I did because the prices really came down afterwards !
