Buying a Z out of state? Negotiating? Help...
I've been looking to purchase a new car to replace my 98 Altima for a very long time and finally ready to buy. I'm set on an 07 Z, 6-speed, any non-base model coupe will do.
I have found several in my price range of under 20 within 150 miles, but all the dealerships close to my house have them selling for about 2-3 grand over that. Is it worth taking the trip and saving a few grand out of state? Also for example if a car dealer is selling a Z for 23, and I find basiclly the same one out of state for 20, how much will I be able to negotiate for approx? Finally has anyone purchased a car more then 100 miles from home?

are you going off of list prices? have you tried negotiating with locals? they want to move cars. find some decent 'list' priced Z's and use them as a negotiating tool. I would try that before exploring having a car shipped (~1k in cost and you don't get to inspect it first, unless you fly down there..

Fly out, drive it home. This is after having it inspected by a 3rd party shop of your choice. This is worth it to me to save thousands. But 150 miles is barely long distance at all. Have a friend come with you to buy it.
The prices I'm going by are mostly on autotrader and cars.com. I've found several cars for around 19, 3 hours or less away, while dealers close by have the same car for around 23. Is it possible to use these out of these cheaper offers to lower the local dealers pricing? If so how much? Thanks
Fly-buy-drive may present you with several problems:
a. Vehicle condition is not as advertised. The "immaculate" 350z turns out to have hail damage.
b. Most likely the seller will want cash.
c. A dealer will give you temporary registration. If you are buying from a private seller you may have to spend the day at the DMV.

Good advice David, but anyway I wont be flying, if anything it would be an hour or three drive after checking out pictures and talking on the phone about details so if the car is less then par in person it wouldn't be end of the world.

Know how much the car is worth before speaking to the dealer. This dealer tried to pull a fast one on me. She said the car's asking price was already way below KBB value. She didnt even know what trim the Z was... had to call me back 30mins later and felt stupid. If a dealer tries to do this, just laugh at them and hang up.
You may have a unique tax situation. Pay sales tax in another state, and New York may give you credit.
Pay no sales tax (private seller) and New York will get you when you register the car.

The whole taxing and other variables I have to work out some more. For example here are two links, the cheaper out of state z, and the more expensive but very similar close to home z.

Worth taking a drive out to check out these cheaper out of state Z's or could I use this to lower the prices of the local Z's. If so how much do you think by, ballpark. Use these two as example.

I know the second is a base. Here's a simpler question. I find 2 identical z's for sale. The ones within 100 miles are going for 19, while the exact same Zs are selling for 23. How much could I talk down a local dealer from 23? Pretend both Z's are same trim and millage.
