I am new here and considering buying a rev up and have read a little on complaints about the oil consumption issues on the rev up motors.

My questions are:

1) Is the motor consuming oil the only problem or could it/will it lead to a blown motor or other issues?

2) If so, should regularly checking oil levels and adding oil be my only concern?

Forum members complain about everything from oil consumption to tire feathering. Its a wonder that all 350Zs are not in the junkyard.

I have a 2006 Grand Touring 350Z with the rev up engine and have not had any oil consumption issues. I bought it used with 43,000 miles on it about 14 months ago. I've only put another 5000 miles on it since then. The original owner had an extended bumper to bumper warranty and never had any work done on the car beyond one cooling system flush. When I first heard about oil consumption issue with 2006 models I tried doing some research, but could not find any definitive information explaining what had caused the problem or even how frequently it occurred.

I have an 06 no oil consumption *knock on wood* been driving it for about 15,000 miles, bought it with 50k on it. Just keep an eye on the oil and you should be fine.

Thanks for your input. Maybe it was an early production rev up issue like the 05 anniversary and track model engine

Even non rev-ups consume oil. 1 qt or more every 1000 miles and you get a new engine, but 1 qt in 1005 miles, and you're stuck with checking the level and adding as appropriate. It's not a big deal to me.

He speaks the truth. Went through 4 rounds of "Oil Consumption Test" at the dealership with my 2006 Z. I knew from checking the dipstick that it was losing oil, but according to the service dept.'s standards it was within the acceptable consumption level. Easiest thing to do is to keep some spare quarts of oil around, and occasionally top-off as needed. Other than that, just enjoy the ride.

It's not a service department standard. The engineers provided an ultra-dumb barchart w/ the TSB for oil consuption inspections... But somehow everyone knows '05 & '06 manual rev-ups have a high possibility or burning oil... except the engineers

Right. What I was implying is that the tech and the service manager clearly saw that the level was low. Lower than anything they would prefer to have in their own vehicle. Yet the box they filled in on the "shades of grey" barchart was literally adjacent to the 'failure' zone. What's that, like 0.5 mm difference on the dipstick?

Maybe it's an ethical thing, but they could have just as easily said it failed the test and replaced the engine under warranty. Anyway, I decided to just deal with it and keep some extra oil around. Occasionally I smell some oil burning and it's always when I am at very heavy throttle, which for me is not too often.

This may be a dumb question but would I have to have a warranty for me to attempt to try and get Nissan to fix the problem if it failed their OC "test"?

If this issue bothers you so much (it bothered me when I was buying my Z), then go with an 07+ (which was what I ended up doing). Price difference is only a few grand, which you can easily save, be it a month or 2's time or just finance a larger amount.

My friend has an 06 and his RevUp motor is perfectly fine though...

And for parts that are mass-produced on machinery, I suspect there are even more that fly under the radar. Jiffy Lube, etc., just empty the oil and charge you for a change (some don't change the oil filter though, need to be careful!), so the data is likely skewed on the conservative side, IMO.

It's not a recall, so unless you are still under the 5/60 powertrain warranty or had purchased an extended warranty (usually 7/100), you are SOL.

Yes. The probability of Nissan giving you a new motor is slim to none.

The rev up had a ring issue. It was supplier related. If your 05 anniversary or 06 is not consuming oil it has probably been dealt with. If it is you can probably get Nissan to fix the consumption issue after a real test but they aren't going to spring for a motor at this stage.
