So im graduating from highschool in a couple weeks and i currently have a nissan altima coupe 09' with around 40,000 miles .. it is 2.5 4cyl. I was looking at 06' 350z with 65,000 miles and was wondering if it was a good idea to trade my car in for it .

My dad said that he will trade my car in for the z and pay the extra so he can get only liability insurance on it , and i currently have liability only so i doubt insurance will change a lot.
I will be getting a job soon and throughout college but it will be only part time as i will be a full time student.

Considering im going to be going back and forth from my college once every two months or so in the fall; the college is around 170 miles one way.

So i really like the Z but is the Z worth getting now or should i just wait 4 years till i finish college and get a new z?

 

Keep the Altima. It should be the better car for your pocketbook, commuting, hauling stuff, etc.

Wait until you get out of college for whatever floats your boat then.

Get the Z. You are only young once.

Do well in college.. that makes you worthy of a better car. Your Dad is willing to help you and that tells me you deserve his help.

Get the 350Z now so you can concentrate on your studies and not be wondering if you should have got the Z......

 

Get the Z. I bought mine during my spring semester of my freshman year and it's a big reason why i go to class 99% of the time. I absolutely love driving it. It's been a year and 3 months since i decided to jump on one after saving up during high school. It gets practically double what my pathfinder got in the MPG department and is 10x more fun to drive. Once again, get the Z. But be cautious of the 2006 year model unless your more of a slush-box kind of guy.

Depends on what you plan on doing with the car.. Don't think about drifting unless you are taking the car to a track. If it's a revup check it out for oil consumption. Get it and have fun.

but beware, insurance, gas, and maintenance is not cheap for these cars, make SURE you can afford it. for example, replaceing brakes on a 350z with brembo's your looking around $1,500+ for the set USED in most cases. i pay $300 a month insurance with full coverage. but it could be a little cheaper or more expensive where you are, and i would always suggest full coverage, dont go cheap on a car like this.

If you want it and can afford it I say go for it! But like everyone said it can be expensive. Gas and maintenance especially on an older Z. I have an 06 Z and I've been upgrading and modding it since I've bought it. If you plan on doing anything to it know parts aren't cheap you can get decent deals on used parts other people are selling. Also things break and need repair on an older car. Ive had to replace my 02 sensors which there are 6 of and that cost a pretty penny. Also in a college town people aren't so gentle with their cars in parking lots so expect you will get dings and scratches.

 

Brakes can easily be done for under $300

Very sound advice and you can only take one chick home at a time in the Z.

 

Keep the Altima.

 

A brake job wouldn't cost $1500, you can get pads and rotors at advance auto cheap, not much more than the standard brakes. If you have a caliper fail, it will get a bit more expensive.

As for insurance, I pay less than $85/month for full coverage on my 07 roadster. Always call your insurance for a quote before buying a car, you don't want any surprises. Everyone is in a different situation.

Be careful of the 06 model. The manual transmission models are known to burn oil. An 07 or newer would be better all around, except for the slave cylinder on the manual models, but there are aftermarket parts to fix that.

 

I wouldn't suggest one for college.

Plus with gas, insurance and repairs it will add up fast.

 

Keep the Altima. It is newer, lower miles, and better on gas. Save up and maybe in 1 or 2 years you can come back to the Z. I would hold off as much as possible.

Also, don't forget that many people in college can't drive and can most likely hit your car in the lot. My brother has had his Integra at school since the fall and it already got hit twice in the parking lot.

If you were a commuter it would be a different story.
