Default Best way to clean the engine?

How do you recommend cleaning the engine? Is it okay to use the sprayer at the car wash, or will that harm the engine? I've seen some car washes with an "engine cleaner" is it not safe to use?

Thanks,

Kevin

on my last 2 cars and my ninja, this is what my procedure was...

it needed to be done about once a month

i never had any problems, but i am open to suggestions...

1)spray cool engine down with water first.
2)spray degreaser (like citrus ones... not simple green) all over the engine... i mean on everything.
3)let sit for about 10 min (dont let it dry out though)
4)spray engine down again with water... removing all degreaser.
5)let it dry mostly.
6)use wd-40 and spray over all the engine and hoses, etc... not too thick, but just enough to see a small shine
7)close hood and turn on car for 10 minutes.

what this does is evaporate most of the wd40 from the engine, and it spreads (via the blowing fan) to all the parts of the engine. all plastic pieces and hoses become shiny, and all parts are now covered with a thin layer of wd40.

this is actually the cool thing... as the engine bay gets dirty, the dirt will stick to the wd-40. in about a month when its time to clean again, the wd-40 comes off very easy using just a tad of degreaser. taking the dirt with it. you dont even need to let it sit for 5 minutes anymore.

you can do this without the wd-40 step, and just add a protectant to the plastic parts and hoses...
