Default motor oil = shiny tires?

Alright guys, I have a pretty strange question for you. I heard (don't remember exactly where) that you can keep your tires nice and shiny by using a paint brush and some motor oil (forgot if it was new or used oil) and brushing a light coat, being careful not to get any on the tread. This sounds too strange for me, and a bit too dangerous. Just wondering if any of you guys have heard something like this. I don't plan on trying this myself, I was just curious thats all. Please don't flame me for asking what seems to be a dumb question, I was just curious.

Before there were products designed for specific detailing purposes, people used tricks such as motor oil on the tires. Same as wiping down your car with a bucket of water with some kerosene added. Today there are better products on the market.

As long as its on the side of the tire, it shouldnt do anymore damage to grip then normal tire cleaner. just for the love of god DO NOT put any on the treads.

p.s I'd just buy some tire cleaner, but the point still stands it shouldnt do anymore harm then tirecleaner, that stuff is slick!

before I bought my electric shaver...I would hold a candle to my face and burn off my moustache...then rub salt onto my face so I could get that burning aftershave feeling

I used Crisco. On a really warm day, I could roll the car over on it's side, and fry eggs on the tires.

A Really Great Idea.

not sure how motor oil affects tires, but rubber in general degrades faster if exposed to oil for extended periods... i think
