Default How to remove clearcoat?

I want to take the clearcoat off the two aluminum trim pieces around the steering wheel. It is starting to peel bad and I want to respray it with new clearcoat. Does anyone have any idea how to remove the clearcoat without scratching the surface underneath?

You can use a Dremel with the 684-01 Cleaning/Polishing Accessory Set.-

If you can remove the alum trim pieces, try soaking them in acetone.

I can defineltly do the acetone thing as I can get plenty from the lab I work in, but will it remove the paint underneath (if indeed it is a painted surface and not real aluminum)?

I tried getting new pieces. Performance Nissan and others said they are not available seperate from the steering wheel so I am stuck. How do you know that they are real aluminum? If they are, that would make life much easier.

Be cause I have removed other trim pieces. The pax door handle to be exact. It is thin aluminum wrapped around plastic.

You could always find somebody parting out a wrecked Z or who is willing to sell the stock steering wheel if they've replaced it with an aftermarket one.
