If you've ever been to a car show, especially a concours level show, one of the most common tools you'll see in everybody's bag of tricks is the Cali Duster. It didn't get that kind of following by being harmful to a perfect looking paint job.

I use the microfiber towels with liberal amounts of speed shine. I find comfort in having the surface wet before dragging anything across it. I used the duster on my black S13 and was not that impressed. However, I do live in a desert and as a result probably see a substantially more amount of dust build up than some of you are accustomed to. That may explain my bias towards the duster.

I've used Cali dusters for almost ten years now. They're awesome if used right.

For guys with black cars, I don't see no reason not to have one in your trunk at all times.

i have one, used it once, and will never use it again. I'd rather wash my car the proper way than have swirls.

I have used it for 13 years. I have the small one and the larger one. It never has caused a swirl on any of my cars.

if you would have read the directions it states to leave it on a peice of newspaper for up to 48hrs before using.... It also states that it will leave a residue the first 2-3 times it used...

C'mon, that's ridiculous!

Do you know what swirl marks are? Even if the Cali Duster was made of steel wool, you would have to run it along your car in multiple directions to cause swirls. Otherwise you would just have linear scratches.

How the hell would a Cali duster make swirls??

Unless you took it, pressed it against your car and "waxed on waxed off" then proceeded to brush your door panels like a big tooth brush.

In that case, you deserve to have swirls!
All the Cali duster did was take the dust off your car so you could SEE the swirls you made from a previous wash.

Although swirls are not caused by circulation motions on the paint surface. Therefore you do not have to "wax on wax off" Swirls are illusions by the refraction of light on the paints surface. Even the straightest of fine scratches will appear circular in the sun.

My take on the Cali Duster is a no - no...

I use Kozak towels where I just lay it on the surface and drag across with no pressure at all...

Check it out....

That's not exactly true. I make sure that all washing, drying, waxing and polishing motions are linear. When I do see any swirls, they are all straight line.

The thing about circular swirls is they appear worse because you can see them from just about every angle. Straight line "swirls" appear worse when viewed perpendicular to the direction they're in. As you move to look down the length of a linear swirl, it tends to disappear.

I think your statement needs to be re-worded to say "all swirls are not caused by circular motion".

Also, don't confuse seeing the circular image of the sun in a reflection with a true scratch/swirl that is a circle on the paint.
