you dirty dirty shift boot..... (pics)
Yeah, so after about 4 years of never cleaning my shift boot, I decided it was about time. I didn't think about taking pictures until after I was about halfway done, so no good before and after pictures. All I can say, is that it was FILTHY... and the pictures don't do justice how bad it was. That's probably why I wasn't thinking about taking pictures.... because it was embarrassing. Sticky coke, cigarette ash, grime, dirt, dust, you name it.
And..... without further ado, the finished product:

your boot is way too shiny. Did you put some tire shine on it or something? Try to clean it then condition it with leather cleaner. This method will make it look like new and also make it last. Whatever you put on it, looks like it will kill that leather.

yeah.. good call. I had just started to do a quick clean of the interior(I hate cleaning/detailing in the winter), and the dirty boot finally got the better of me. I dug in without really planning or thinking about it... it was just such an eyesore I decided something had to be done. I didn't even finish cleaning the rest of the car...
...as far as ruining the leather... I think my own hand rubbing on it will wear out soon enough anyway. It's already getting worn, which is weird because I usually palm the shifter.

Lift up here to separate the interior plastic piece from the console:
The rest should remove rather easily:
Disconnect the cable for the 3 *****:
Remove the 8 or so screws. This will completely separate the plastic interior piece from the shift boot, and you can set it aside. Be very careful not to drop the screws, because I can only imagine they would be a lot of fun to retrieve.
Now, if you want to remove the metal/plastic ring around the base of the shift boot to clean it.... there are numerous clips all the way around that you have to remove. These can be tricky to get off. I got one partially unclipped and then moved to another one, and then it was easy from there. Seems like these plastic clips could break if you're not careful.
In the original pictures 1 and 3, you can sort of see how the boot is sandwiched between the bottom female piece, and the two top rings. (one of the rings is plastic...which has the male clips and guide pins. The other one is metal ring that simply slips over the plastic one)
No worries about the orientation about the boot either because with the way the pins are situated, there is only one way it can go.

BTW.... glad to say I quit smoking. At the end of january I got sick as hell.... too sick to smoke... and I just quit cold turkey. It's been about a month so I am home free....
also glad to say my Z's interior has no burns, and does not stink at all.
I'll throw down a 4 course meal in my Z..... hell I don't care as long as I get most of it in my mouth.....
Plus I'm rolling with no stereo and no rear interior... a little food crumbs couldn't hurt anything...
